Bouncing this thread:

I am looking to make a homemade biltong drying box and wanted to avoid using a lightbulb, I was looking to use a heat pad instead to circulate the air. Does anyone have any idea where this kind of thing can be bought? I really want a low power heat pad I can keep on for 3-4 days at a time.

Garden supply. They use them to start seeds.

Cheers, I am looking at reptile heat pad suppliers, home brew suppliers and garden suppliers via google now - the challenge is size, I want a small pad that gives out about 60w and cannot find one at the moment.

Bump!

Been enjoying making jerky, of late. Made some lovely marinade using Nandos hot sauce, paprika, garlic powder, salt and black pepper.

Gave some to a South African colleague (who had just returned from a fortnight of snaffling biltong and sausages in SA) and he was very impressed. Told me I could sell it!

Got a £40 dehydrator from Amazon with adjustable temperature, but I think it's a false economy getting a cheaper dehydrator with plastic trays. They do get brittle after using for a few times at the sort of temperatures you need for safe meat dehydration, and you have to be *extremely careful* to avoid breaking them when you wash them. I'll probably think about getting one with stainless steel trays in future.
