Home broadband: O2 vs Virgin vs Be. What's been your experience?

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php?page=availability-exchange-search

This site will tell you (roughly) how far you are from the local exchange.

If you use that along with any line stats from your current router, you can get an estimate of your potential speed with ADSL2+ using this graph.

That's the main limitation with ADSL2+ - line quality as well as distance from the exchange - if you're very close and have a "clean" line, you should get close to the theoretical maximum. I'm about a mile from the exchange and must have a pretty good line as I get 21.5 meg, which I'm more than happy with.

Do you know anyone in your building with Be* Ed? You'd get a pretty good indication if you did...

We're with O2, but it's not their unbundled service, it's them reselling BT.

The phone lines around here are awful, hence the terrible speeds.

We've been testing our BT connection against the competition and it's, basically, shit.

O2, Virgin and Be all offer far better dowbnload speeds according to this site, so I'd like to hear your opinions if you're using any of them.

I'm an O2 mobile customer now, so I think I get a cheaper deal if I go with them, but what's your experiences with these companies?

How far from the exchange are you? I'm with Be, but we are 4.5km from trhe exchange (ffs... in London!!!) and can only get max 2megish.

My connection seems to be all over the place, It was slug-slow earlier (3.5MB/s) but now it's reached the (comparatively) giddy heights of:

No cable here, so O2 is looking good...
BT were having a fucking laugh. Hello O2.

how much are you paying a month for that?!:)
Less than BT!

First three months on the 12 month contract are free, and then it's £22/month with a free wi-fi router lobbed in. I've tested it again and it's reporting 'just' 17MBs now, but that's still miles better than cranky old BT.

How on earth do you get that fast though?

I thought that the limit for ADSL 2 was 24Mb and that was only a theoretical maximum in prime conditions?

It's seems to fluctuate between 17MB/s (which is what I'd expect) and way faster speeds - like this last test:

And here's another test:

yeh I pay a tenner with o2 and they are good :)

That's a great price for those speeds.

Jesus! Ed you sitting on top the local exchange or something!? We're under half a mile from our local one in Greenwich and we only get 6-10mbs...

If you are only getting 2, that distance from the exchange its not the distance thats messing with the speed. I'd imagine the copper is quite old.

im with BE, my speed fluctuates from anything between 6 mbps to 16 mbps......

im thinking about changing down to the 16mbps from the 24, as it never gets up that high anyway.

I dont get it though.

I thought only Cable internet is physically possible of those speeds? ADSL just isn't that fast. Surely? Even Be advertise their speeds as upto 24Meg.

How come Ed is getting an impossible 49meg?!?!?!?!

It seems quite consistently high:

I'll download some stuff later and see what speeds I'm actually getting.

I wouldn't trust those results, it is unlikely that you will get more than 20Mb.

Try this one, I think it is more accurate, although your line could be giving misreadings.

Bare in mind the first couple of weeks they "train" your line for the optimal snr levels. So you may get times when it will grind to a halt somewhat during this period. The thing I love about O2/be* is they are completely transparent with all of this if you phone their support or check their forums.

I would have thought, because of the very short distance you are from the exchange, you can request a certain type of connection that gives you a lil bit extra speed. I forget what it's called now, but they done it for us before when we were practically living next door to the exchange.
