This might be worth a look... He seems set on the wonderful road to geekdom. How open are his parents to piracy? You could always rip CS4 and one of the 3D graphics packages; see which element he takes too best. Also considerably better for education and future than Warhammer it must be said. There are cheaper animation and 3D packages if they want to go down the legal route. I may be expecting a bit much from a 13 year old though... :D

To be fair my colleagues nephew was in pretty much the same boat though; his parents got him into the more serious side of computers (probably helped by the fact my colleague used to be a programmer) and now that he's 15 he's getting very into stop-motion animations. Very doable on your own and, though they require patience, it's that special geeky patience.

Does he read at all?? He sounds scarily similar to mastersnake at that age. Young snake, as well as getting into warhammer, also reads a lot of mange/anime books.
I'd try him with some model kits(of a bigger size than Warhammer) to see how he gets on with putting them together and painting them tbh.

I gave up trying to prise boy away from the pc/console and now he's doing an HND in Computing.

Exactly; don't fight the geek, nurture it - start them on the graphics/programming/design stuff young and they'll either be heading a successful computing business or doing a PhD before you know it. Also look at physics and electrical stuff.

attempts to 'normalise' your average young geek ends only in pain. Accept the Warhammer and maybe he won't end up making a living as a marshall at LARP events:D

LARP is just... Well I think some images will have to be found... :D

It is kind of tempting though... :o

worse than that- Buying cheapo Mutant Chronicle figures from Beatties and trying to pass them off as Adeptus Astartes:o

You mean there's a way of doing it without using the cardboard counters that came in the box?

Or does that expose my age? It must be, oooh, 25 years since I played Warhammer I spose ;-)

No, as far as this nonsense about women being allowed to play games is concerned...

Cheers for all the ideas! I'll suggest this model malarky I think and buy him a copy of that magazine and see what he thinks. Good idea to start him on a bigger model. The cooking suggestion is a good one as he enjoys that at school. His mum wouldn't be too keen as it will probably mean a few broken bits here and there but I think that would be all part of the learning experience eh? She wraps him up in cotton wool a bit. We did respite care for the 2 lads a couple of times this year and had them working like dogs (relatively for these lads!) in the kitchen washing up after tea and making their own sandwiches for lunch. Mum just wouldn't trust them! They won't learn if she doesn't let them try!

Man are you hearking back to the ancient days of hex based wargaming? before my time oh ancient one (tbf I did have a hex based Battle of The Five Armies LOTR wargame)

jonnyd- sounds like ma is way too overprotective here.

Oh god anything but LARP!

The kids does sound like a geek. Perhaps not Warhammer, but some cardboard crack like Magic or L5R. Maybe give the kid a gift certificate to a traditional game store and let him decide.

Dude, I have a stack of hex based wargames on the shelf behind me just now :-) Lovely things they are...

Warhammer was all a bit chaos spikey bits for my taste at the time. All got a bit silly and aimed at the kiddies. Iirc we'd rather play MERP or Harnmaster.

Bit sad really ;-)

I am in awe of you and would like your autograph:D

Mentioned it to the lad tonight and he seems keen even a bit excited by it! Pity we've already bought his chrimbo present this year. Might have to be a bonus January present just because! Might even have a little bash my almost 30 year old self. :o
All this geek talk is nowt to be ashamed of btw. Geek is the new cool or something. :hmm: Geek chic.
