It deserves to be the biggest crossover record since The Cold Vein. Whether or not it will be...

Enjoyed that muchly - will have to give the album a proper listen - have listened (and liked) to it a few times since you copied it for me but get distracted and forget to go back to it - can see it being more rewarding with repeat listens

Dunno how you can say that! They're excellent imo and fantastic live, by all accounts.

Things Fall Apart is a really strong album, "You Got Me" is one of the best hip hop narratives ever, I reckon. Really strong story telling and interplay by Black Thought and Erykah Badu is great stuff.

Horses for courses, I suppose.

not wishing to be a pedant but it was Eve on 'You Got Me' that rapped with Black Thought. Before she went solo, and was, lets face it, a bit crap.

Erykah just sang the hook..

She can rap though, but only about as well as Missy Elliot can sing..

Do it. It is a grower, for me one of the best hip hop records I've heard, and Woods is like some kind of rap titan on it.

Soz, yeah, you're right, did know that.

I like Erykah's last album, spesh the one about hip hop.

If you like non phixion ? or you like angry rocky hip hop strickly bout drugs n politics,I'm really feeling the new ill bill album almost every track's good except the hook on the track with immortal technique.this albums really good as well>Psycho Realm and Street Platoon Present... Sick Symphonies: Sickside Stories

i tend to like hip hop which is a little positive (but not cheesey). Just not into the tough guy thing.
Giant panda - fly school reunion. The follow up electric laser sucks.
Edan - beauty and the beat
Themselves - the no music
The Grouch - Simple Man- Beans and Rice Sampler has some great tunes
Collective efforts (self titled)

and not strictly hip hip but the herbaliser - blow your headphones is very good.

hey guys, cheers for all the recommendations- still working my way through the first several posts so this whole thread should keep me occupied for some while.

Much appreciated- peace to y'all

I used to *hate* hip hop with a passion, I always thought the c in rap was silent but then I moved in with one of my now best mates and he introduced me to the good stuff. I can still pin point the 2 tracks that really switched me on to this whole thing- 7L & Esoteric- word association and Gangstarr- Full clip.

He stuck em on one night we were smoking and that was me hooked- instant beat junkie haha

Is that the album with 'the blend' on it? One of my all time fave tracks.

I like all sorts, the gritty stuff, the positive, the wordplay stuff, stuff I call 'punch line' rap (not too serious, just clever, funny rhymes and a nice beat you can get your groove on to), the tough guy/ gangsta stuff (I don't take it seriously- I just like the imagery etc) and the subjects lend themselves to good records.

If anyone knows what I mean by 'punchline' rap recommend me some of that gear.

It's hard to find non cheesy +ive stuff so I'll check out your suggestions. Cheers SOS

Got a few apathy and celph titled records somewhere, not listened to them in a while so might dig em out and have a re-listen.

Cheers for reminding me about Pro Green, heard one of his freetsyles before. I can't remeber too many specifics but lines about the streets/ mike skinners and necking e's and having huge pupils featured. I'll have to hoke it out here.

for some really well written punchline stuff look up icon the mic king, rent money music. The first one i think he's got two rent money mixtapes
