I won't profess to be a DnB expert, but what about Timbaland's work around 2001, specifically Missy's "Get Ur Freak On" and Bubba Sparxxx's "Ugly"?

I'm pretty certain those two tracks were just standard hip hop.

I dunno if I agree with that, it's bigger now than it's ever been because it's all over the world now

And there is still a decent amount of techy and liquidy stuff like RevM pointed out. There was just never this amount of shit before cos it's never been this popular, a bit like the odd cousin of hiphop that it is
