Hi Speed USB 2.0 Port Hub - help please

Try this: disconnect all your computer equipment and all your electronic gadgetry and slam it all in the bin.

Then post again if you have any more problems. From an internet cafe.

That Kensington one doesn't seem to be powered (ie no power supply that plugs into the wall). This is the powered one (£31.00). You'll need a powered one to run high-power devices like USB disk drives and such (webcams too, I think)..

Edit: no, my mistake. The Kensington one you linked to does have a power supply, but I'm not sure about the D-Link one..

They are both 7-port hubs. One can see them and count them. Shall we both count to seven? Are you ready? 1-2-3-4-5-6-7.

Yes, I can see that. I figure maybe the Amazon description was wrong :o

  • 4 USB ports supplying up to 500mA (with power adapter) per port
  • Over current protection support
  • Supports high speed (480 Mbps), full-speed (12 Mbps) and low speed (1.5 Mbps) transfer rates
  • Chains up to 127 USB devices
  • USB2.0 and ACPI compliant
  • 4 female type (A) and 1 female type (B) USB connectors
  • Power LEDs for both self-power and bus-power modes
  • 4 activity LEDs for downstream ports

and then I read things like this which confuse me

notes
* you must separate your USB devices into fast and slow. In my case fast includes external hard drive and webcam. slow includes mouse and keyboard. Only plug fast or slow devices into your hub. if you mix them, your slow devices will slow down your fast ones.
* it requires its own mains socket for power. (well it would - you can't get power for all 7 devices down the single cable that comes from your computer).

I know. I just like to bitch. You are correct - Amazon have fucked up.

That'll be the power supply I mentioned. Make sure the hub you buy includes one. Not sure about that fast/slow devices thing. We'll await further input on that..

well I was hoping to get it before he came, then leave him to set it up and install everything that needs installing :D

well get one then... doesn't matter which...the problems(if you have any) will still be there when you do...or not.

And the first thing he SHOULD do is unplug all the USB devices you have, and reintroduce them individually until a problem arises..or all things run correctly.

The only way things will run correctly are if the OS is up to date(yrs should be on SP4) and the equipment is BACKWARDS compatible...because you are using a REALLY OLD version of Windows that manufacturers don't care about much...

The DLink hub "should" work*... I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't...I would be more doubtful about the Kensington hub...but then I would buy neither...and especially not from Amazon...however you want to buy from Amazon & you'll get the one you "fancy"...so good luck.:D

*in the blurb it mentions 2000...the Kensington doesn't.

e2a::: things are more likely to work if you use the most up to date drivers....especially if the discs you are provided with don't "apparently" work.

What would you buy then?

Sorry but I'm all out of headbutts today, Minnie. I used the last on an 80-year-old pensioner I saw struggling home with 3 shopping bags.

Now. About these USB hubs..

(Oh, you do make me laugh..)
