Hi, just thought I would share my general thoughts on Jayzs performance.

Jay Z's a bag of shit. Snoop Dogg is the better rapper all over. Voice, flow lyrical skill, sense of humor-everything

Like talking crazy, I'm not gonna front. For three hours. I feel sorry for his kids at school. Jay was talking crazy. Not as crazy as me, I was talking mad crazy. Zane Lowe was there - he wasn't talking crazy. Sell out.

Wow! This is 2008. I'd love him to do the news or travel.

"... It's gonna be mad busy on the M25 as a lorry spilled its shit. so like the stock market cats is mad nervous and they be selling their shares and shit."

'Iran be front'n' again. Gonna have to lay down some mad sanctions. International condemnation! you know how we do'

And then there's all the stuff that's outside the mainstream.

My point was that Jay-Z's a pop act and shouldn't be taken too seriously, even if some people choose to believe all sorts of stuff about him. :)

He's not a pop act though, he has some songs with killer hooks and pop production but he's still lauded as one of the best ever by rappers and fans alike. Not too many people say the same about Nelly, for instance.

Also, Kanye West, Common, Lil Wayne, Mos Def...they're all pretty mainstream so no need to make out like I was talking with my hip hop dick out.

I think we should keep that element out of Glastonbury, headliners should be people who celebrate life, like Amy Winehouse

I just don't think you listen to much hip hop. Tell me if I'm wrong, but that's the impression I get.
No, I don't. Can you explain what more there is to the apolitical stuff than a crude celebration of one's own wealth? I do struggle with it as it represents many of the things I hate.

well. There's a lovely tune called 'Left my wallet in el segundo'

it's pretty much about a dude leaving his wallet in el segundo.

And of course 'Three is a magic number'. Does what it says on the tin.

It's like any other genre, it has its progressives and its meatheads. The comparison I made with someone writing off rock music after listening solely to Oasis is valid. I would never defend someone like 50 Cent because he is a complete knob, but Jay-z's lyrics are often inspirational as well as being aspirational. Reading a bio of him (or even his wiki page) can also give you a better understanding of him as an artist because he is often self-referential in his lyrics.

If you're looking for a more well rounded view of the genre, listen to some of the artists I listed back there, before Iam started taking the piss out of me so mercilessly. Really do try and have a listen to some of them on youtube or something because I don't think you can be in a position to criticise the genre without actually giving it a real listen first.

Hang on, you started it with Steps! :D

I was actually kind of agreeing with you, although looking back, I see maybe you didn't take it that way.

Hip Hop's a far, far bigger genre than the Kanye/Jay-Z/50 Cent that most people see waved in front of their nose, full of absolutely astonishing acts, if you're only prepared to look.

But to think that those pop artists up there are representative of Hip Hop as a whole is like saying Coldplay represent the entire of guitar music...

Saw JayZ on Ross's show and he came across as a intelligent, likeable bloke, far cooler than that hyped up muppet Will Smith. Glad he won over the Glastonbury crowd. Next year we want an Abba reunion. :)

"yo! The NHS be changing up the game, yo! be like mad fines 'n shit if da hospitals don't come correct. Be like, yo, cats chillin' in the hood but I be feeling this other hospital, no what I'm saying. I'ma go to this hospital in this other hood yo! Lord Darzi, the Health Minister, be talking some craaaaaazeeee shit!

I thought he took it by storm. He could have gone down a 50 Cent route of having a bundle of guys in hoodies on stage with a backing tape. But he's a showman, a great lyricist and with his reputation he deserved the spot and took it with both hands.

Shame he did the rubbish Linkin Park version of Encore though. The original would have been a much better end to the evening.

:D

To continue in a serious vein, this new kind of consumerist, apolitical rap -unlike...NWA - does nothing to awaken consciousness or stimulate thought. It seems to me little more than an opiate for the black masses.

NWA?!? Sought to awaken consciousness and stimulate thought?

Suck this, bitch!

Anyone else notice this glaring error?

Does Westwood REALLY think the Jay-Z gig was on Friday?

He is made of fool. Perhaps yer radioman was watching Kings of Leon and got mixed up ...;) :p

Missed the gig myself, I was working, but everyone who mentioned him said he put on a superb show. Respect to him for drawing a big crowd, a lot of whom would have gone just out of curiosity and then maybe stayed to listen properly and take it all in.

gave us a quiet shift too, what with Massive also on at the Other Stage :D
