Heroin Sounds

dont know if this counts but all the junkies i used to know were all listening to the psychedelic furs new album back in 1982 (the title escapes me atm) Run run run run away, east street etc
i heard it so many times round their houses that i always relate it to heroin use.

errrrr....that's really weird, i was talking about that VERY THING to mate only a few weeks ago. Only in Scotland the longevity of that Furs LP you speak of, Forever Now, and the one before, Talk Talk Talk, as the perennial smack soundtrack seemed to last into the mid 1990s. In fact, if you wanted to score in edinburgh, north berwick or haddington even now probably all you'd need to do is walk about till you hear 'sister europe' blaring out a window and ring the buzzer :)

Dandy Warhols - Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth

But isn't that about Anton Newcombe from Brian Jonestown Massacre?

Johnny Thunders

Dead Boys (Stiv Bators)

Greg Dulli

All used heroin as far as I recall, not that i was there like, but from what I remember.

Stranglers (Hugh Cornwell in particular) - "Don't Bring Harry" (much less obvious Heroin inspired tune)

Frank Sinatra starred as a junkie in "Man with the Golden Arm" but recorded "I've got you Under My Skin"

Lots of stuff by Spiritualized, e.g. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space".

If you believe Jason Pierce all the drug references in his songs are about paracetomol and red wine. Yeah right, "hey man there's a hole in my arm where all the money goes"

It's a line lifted from John Prine, but your point stands.
I always though sonic was the worst out of the two (junkie wise)

There's one song I always relate to heroin use, even though it doesn't have anything to do with heroin.

When I hadn't been using for very long, but it was starting to get a bit of a hold of me, I was lying on my bed feeling depressed thinking about wtf i was doing to myself...then the song "santa cruz you're not that far" (by the thrills) came on the cd player. It was just the mood of the song, and that first line: "so tell me where it all went wrong..."

I know this song has nothing to do with drugs at all, but I always associate it with that feeling.

"There she goes" by the La's is a good one about heroin.

It's a lovely song that, can't say I ever associated with skag mind you :hmm:

Of course I never figured out that 'Perfect Day' was about heroin so there's no point asking me.

Oh no, its definately nothing to do with gear. I just associate it with that time of my life i suppose, when i was getting into using a bit too heavily.

It is a lovely song - i love the thrills!

Meet Amyl-Nitrate she's our heroin

A guy walks up to a girl in a bar,
And asks "What do you do?" She says "Tar!"

TMP Smackdown by The Meat Purveyors

Not seen Jubilee? Its an odd film. A vision of an anarchistic future from 1977.

Derek Jarman movie, It's got Adam Ant in it from when he was still punk.
I'd expect it to look pretty dated by now but it's worth a watch

The Last Of England is a later, better made, more experimental film in a similar kind of vein (dystopia, decay, fracture etc.) that's great. The first time I saw it people were walking out and that's often a good sign :D

Steve Earle, stopped making music for four years due to heroin and cocaine addiction. Spent time in jail for possession of drugs went into rehab and released his best stuff afterwards.

how about The Flaming Lips?

do they fit in with this whole idea much?

Stephen (Drozd who writes and plays most of the actual music) was so bad he used to keep selling all their equipment and stuff

but I don't really think of them as everr being about heroin or having a heroin
sound, whatever that is.

Same with Gibby from The Butthole Surfers...............

Soft Cell - Baby Doll. Heroin AND stripping
Baby doll is on her trapeze
Wearing the smile that she never sees
Thinking of dollar as she tries to tease

Time to play Sheba on a wooden stage
Taking off the clothes that are grimy with age
Rubbing down the skin that is white and cold
And the sticking plasters that cover up the holes
Stared at by a man that would do her harm
Needs to earn the money that will feed his arm
He promised you security safe and warm
He promised you security safe and warm
...

Been lots of good music on this thread, so how about some real damaged good: John Frusciante (from Chili Peppers) album "Smile from the streets you hold"

Frusciante released his second solo album, Smile from the Streets You Hold, in 1997. The album's first track, "", was largely characterized by cryptic lyrics and hysterical screeches. Frusciante also coughs throughout the track, showcasing his deteriorating health. By his own admission, the album was released in order to get "drug money"; he withdrew it from the market in 1999. Yet Frusciante has stated that he believes the material on the record is of high quality and wishes to one day re-release it.

its all on youtube!
its pretty terrible, but has a lot of lo-fi off-my-tree charm to it nonetheless - this one for example is pretty cool:
