Help with measuring for a bra

Fuck it, I'm going to Marks later to get measured just to prove you wrong, Kanda :p
marks and spencers are rubbish. they measured my mum as a 40dd, she's a 34j. i'm half tempted to go in sometime and see what they suggest i am as they don't make my size.

You're supposed to measure round your ribcage under your bra and if it's an even number add 4 inches, if it's an odd number add 5. Then measure round the fullest part of your bust and subtract the first measurement from the second to get your cup size. I think.

Yes you said that but why? Why do you think you've got to add 4 inches or 5 inches? That makes no sense.

the 4/5 inches comes from when bra bands didn't have elastic in them.

Thank you.

But they do have elastic now so the 4/5 thing is bollocks?

God yes! and it drives me mad.

Madz - would you do me the honour of coming bra shopping with me next time you're up - if you have time?

I'd be better at it than Kandy-boy.

Courtesy of spangles from a previous thread..........

ooh - thanks - I think I've just found a ready-made blog post.

Go into M&S /debenhams or a similar place & try a load on ... im different sizes in virtually every shop, as they seem to be syncronised with sizings,

for example i love the freya bras, but they come up SOOO small that i have to go up 2 cup sizes compared to some other brands.

last time i went bra shopping, i had 5 different sizes in the changing room with me

sarahluv speaks the truth. Don't go to M&S - do you have a John Lewis where you are? If not, go to Rigby and Peller next time you're in London. It will change your life. :)

Only got M&S :(

The nearest John Lewis is Plymouth I think.

To be honest it's solely for the purpose of proving quimmy and kanda wrong and I have to go into the shop next door anwyay ;)

So what was your measurement below the bust?

Thank you.

I think the 4-5 inch thing is just to make it a simple 1=A, 2=B,... sort of calculation. A is 5-6 inches difference, B is 6-7 inches difference, ...

Madz, do you wear a bra when taking the bust measurement? Not suggesting they're sagging or anything, but it could make a big difference.

As said though, trial and error is really the only way.

would make sense, if the didn't say that someone with a 30 inch underbust, should add four, and look for a size 34 bra!

It's so wrong!

30 inch underbust -> size 30 bra.

But it doesn't say that. The adding 4/5 is about coming up with a number such that 1=A cup, 2=B cup, etc. I can't see anything that says to use the under measurement + 4/5 for the strap size.
