Help with a dissertation! What is art?

i'm not sure, but shes been interviewing people and is going to try to get someone to transcribe the interviews for her. i thought the internet might be a good place to turn, because people say things they might not say in person, and it doesnt need to be transcribed either!

I was right!

art is the opposite to science as subjectivity is to objectivity.

The first cannot be measured, the latter must be measured.

There is no proof in art, but science requires it.

Science reflects the logical side of humans, art the mystical and less rational side. Check out the communists and other control freaks who want to control everybody's lives through the negation of the arts, and the promotion of rules laws more rules and more laws.

Art allows humans to express themselves with no boundaries, hence its mystical dimension.

Perhaps the nearest humans can get to living in freedom is to combine the two 'disciplines'.

I said it better, and earlier.

thats great! thanks fela. you have a fascinating perspective!

could you answer the other questions in the op?

What do you think about art?

What is an exhibition space?

What makes something art?

Is everything in art galeries art?

Can anyone make art?

Can anything become art?

What is the most intrestering/innovate object/sound/thing/experience yoyu have occoured recently?

Do you want to just pay us to do your dissertation for you, or do want to pay half price, and we'll just do your thinking for you, but you have to do the actual writing?:)

All these comments about doing someone else's dissertation are amazing.

What is wrong with seeking ideas from other people to help formulate your own thinking on the subject? After all, one of the objectives of doing a dissertation is to become rigorous with one aspect of knowledge/life and to become a sort of mini-'expert' on it.

How can you do that without research? Or should this research only come from certain sources?

Kudos to those writing dissertations who are opening their ears to other people's ideas first. Shows they're listeners in life, not just knowers.

Now, i've already answered them! Not directly, but if you reread what i said, you'll find it answers all your OP questions save for the last one.

And for the last one: i experience it every day, and i think it's one of the greatest examples of art the planet offers: thai girls. I call thailand a giant mobile art gallery... art is on offer just everywhere!

Was it Clive Bell or Herbert Read who said: "You can tell it is art if the eyes follow you around the room."

.

Because I think that coming online and asking for opinions in this way is something akin to plagiarism.

The point of a dissertation is to make the student think and draw conclusions that he/she can then defend. The hard work of getting there is done by doing research in the original sources of whatever area it is, then thinking long and hard, and coming up with something.

It's like you have to write a movie review for a newspaper, but instead of sitting through the movie, you go online and get a bunch of opinions, vette them into an article, and regurgitate it into your piece.

Personally, I'd prefer that a movie reviewer see the movie and write the review before reading the opinions of others.

Charles Bukowski- “Style” :

Style is the answer to everything
A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous day
To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without style
To do a dangerous thing with style, is what I call art

Bullfighting can be an art
Boxing can be an art
Loving can be an art
Opening a can of sardines can be an art

Not many have style
Not many can keep style
I have seen dogs with more style than men
Although not many dogs have style
Cats have it with abundance

What you laughing at? Your own perceptions of what intellect is? What is wrong with such a thesis statement? Why does it reduce you to such humble laughter?

Do you really need to ask? It's too broad. Also, you'd think they would be able to come up with a better idea for a dissertation by that point.
