Help settle a sandwich disagreement

A round of sandwiches would be 2 slices of bread.

One and a half rounds would actually involve 4 slices of bread, 2 whole slices and 2 half slices. The other 2 half slices would make up half of a further round. So there.

Oh, and sandwiches always taste better cut on the diagonal. As any fule kno.

I fear we may have just fanned the flames of the OP's sandwich disagreement.

It hasn't exactly solved the matter :D

I mentioned the subject to a few mates last night after a few beers and spliffs, which ended up getting quite deep, with some tenuous cake analogies, which were later dismissed as a cake is meant for sharing, where as a sandwich is meant to feed one... I never realised it was such a contentious issue! :D

In fact the verb 'sandwich' means to put something inbetween two things.

Therefore you cannot have half a sandwich. It is either a sandwich or it isn't a sandwich.
But if you only use 1 slice of bread the filling isn't between 2 things so a 1 slice sandwich isn't a sandwich. :)

It's clearly 2 sandwiches.

To prove the point how many sandwiches are here?

There are 3/4 of 4 sandwiches. :)

I am often over there, but I have never seen anyone that looks like I think you look like. Even if I did, I don't know if I would approach you. I get all shy, I do!

It's clearly a buffet! :p

I think this is getting too technical!

My point being that if today you walked into a sandwich shop and asked for a sandwich with any filling you would by default expect the sandwich to have 2 slices and filling, if you received your version of sandwiches you would receive one slice of bread folded in half with your filling of choice, which doesn't happen.

Why is that Mr Ste :D

Something along the lines of: if you had a victoria sandwich and cut it in half you wouldn't have 2 cakes therefore it would be a peice or slice of a sandwich. Then onto the fact that a cake and sandwich are different as you would expect to share a cake, whereas a sandwich (regardless of it's size or how many peices of bread were involved) was a food specifically for being eaten by one person... er iyswim :D

A buffet consisting of a dozen little sandwiches! :p

I have just been told that if I have kids I will be starving them cos everytime they ask me for a sandwich I will only give them half :D

What! Firstly, that is clearly a buffet, granted, but there are in fact only (counts) 3 sandwiches represented bread wise as some fucker has been cutting the rounds up into quarters, presumably to disguise the paucity in numbers of actual sandwiches. To complicate matters, you have at least 5 seperate types of filling there, suggesting that what you in fact have is a bastardised amalgam of at least 5 sandwiches.

Shoot the caterer, thats what I say.

Please.

~Its an enormous sandwich, thus proving that sandwiches are not just for one person. I believe it to be salt beef.

How can you tell? It could be an extreme close-up of an hors d'ourves for all you know.

I can't actually find a photo with a suitable scale, but rest assured that these are BIG fucking sandwiches.

Ok... sandwiches are normally for one :p

But with an open top sandwich you're on shaky ground. Tis an oxymoron imo :)

If I said get me a sandwich and you came back with one of those quarters I'd respond "No I meant a WHOLE sandwich". What does that do to our debate?

Marius said:
No andif you cut it in half it wouldn't become 2 filled rolls either.

What if you cut a smorgasbord in half along its X axis and then stacked the two halves? Would that then be a sandwich?

Its not open topped, its just too big to fit in one photo!

Although if it is, in fact, open topped, I will reconsider and find a different photo, because open topped sandwiches are indeed a different kettle of fish. In fact, I would go so far as to say they ain't sandwiches at all, and as such are outside the bounds of this enquiry.
