Help please - again

Use that link I gave you, then we know what type of ram you need and can find you it cheapest. Don't worry if it sounds scary, crucial are one of the largest manufactures of memory, so you can trust them to scan your pc.

Minor point, but why have you posted this 'problem' in the 'software, websites, coding and games' forum when it should really be in 'computers, phones & gadgets' one? :D

It looks like a Dell Inspiron 4000 to me. (I've got one)

If you go to the Dell Technical Support site http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/root/en/product_support_central?c=uk&l=en&systemid=INS_PNT_CEL_4000 you should be able to find out the full spec of the Laptop (especially if you type in the Tag No.) including the memory type.

It should also give full instructions (somewhere) on upgrading the memory. I think it's probably cheaper to buy the memory from someone other than Dell though.

I think it said I need 512mb

That's the amount of it that you need. At the moment you don't have enough, so you need some more. Different computers have different sized holes to put it in and the link I gave you tells you what type you need to put into those holes so that you do have enough.

why is someone else saying not to buy more memory?

for an old puter its not going to do much. see MtM, teh puters parts all work in conjunction with one another. if all the parts are older and you just add one new part it won't make much difference, innnit?

Most older xp machines benefit massively from being taken from less then 512mb to over a 1gb.

I give up. I don't understand anything anymore.

I'm going to smash my computer on the desk now and kill it

Throw it in the bin and just write everything down with a pen and paper - really fast. I doubt that you'll notice much difference.

then she'll have to send letters to editor so he can post her comments here :D

Buy your PC one of those Brain Training thingies and make sure it uses it every day, then see if after a month or two it can manage to remember stuff better more.

Have you actually tried burning a disc? Sometimes the spec is just a guideline and you may find it will work anyway.

What you trying to burn, computer files or are you making video dvd's that will play back on normal dvd players?
