Help Needed 'name my website'

Looks nasty; name me a famous/successful website with a hyphen in.

ok.. it's just aesthetic then.

I thought you meant there might be technical issues (client apps, url encoding etc.)

No specific ideas, but some tips:

  • go for a .com, .net or at least a .co.uk - anything else looks cheap
  • never, ever, choose anything with a hyphen in
  • keep it under 15 letters, preferably shorter
  • check that a similar site doesn't exist under a subtly different name

Shit i've thought of a name but it's 19 letters- do you think it really matters?

Also shall I get .com or .net as I cant afford both :(

I wouldn't post the name up here prior to registration as there are people out there who'll snap up names for the hell of it. But if it's a catchy title, go for it - there aren't any hard-and-fast rules!

yes I had thought of that LOL :)

Oh bollocks I like the name whats another tenner ey? ;)

If you like it, go for it. After all, it's a site to show off you and the name should have something of you in it. Hell, a name that's individual but nineteen letters long is far better than a six-letter name that people will forget immediately!

:)

Depends IMO - wouldn't recommend it but if it's easy to remember maybe it doesn't matter. PM one of us and see what they think?

It's cool its only gonna be an online portfolio for now and not a business name so I think it will be ok.

It's a phrase kinda

just registering it now i'll PM you the name in a min. :)

Most likely no registration restrictions on strings of over 19 characters on any TLDs but do be aware that some (bad) software and web forms do sometimes limit the amount of characters.

Only on the Natural Search, and if its a common word, like 'design' or 'internet' then it will make no difference really as Natural Search will be ranked not only on the Keywords, but on the volume too - and as its a new site, the volume will be low initially
