Took my car for its MOT today and the fella said it's not even worth testing. '96 Micra, rusted up. £350ish worth of welding needs doing.

The car was free, apparently worth less than £100, so not worth fixing.

I don't drive a lot, but I'll be moving soon, further from the family so will be doing more miles on the motorway.

I can afford £2500 if I buy cash. Obviously more if going finance for a newer/better car.

I'm not really a car person, so my tastes are a bit superficial. I want something low hassle, that looks decent, and ideally has a nice stereo with bluetooth/usb type stuff. Don't care about cruise control or any of that sort of thing.

    Manual. Petrol. 1.6ish. Hatchback

    Cars I like:

    Astra
    Golf
    Polo
    etc.

But I'm currently considering a...Smart Roadster

    Any advice?

Of those on your list I'd keep away from VW because they hold their price well. The Astra you'd get more for your money.

Forget about the radio as a priority. They are easy to change. Focus on the vehicle itself.

Failed its MOT most years it was tested, things like broken suspension. Fair to assume it's been particularly unloved.

I like some of those Hyundai hatchbacks, too. i30? i20? Are they any good. I've never known anyone have one...

When you have to do any mileage, you will care about power (up to a fairly low bar), noise/vibration/harshness, and comfort. Smart cars of all models have none of them.

I quite like Audis, but they cost a lot to fix when stuff goes wrong, so no good for me. I buy too many records to be able to afford spending loads of money on cars
Thanks, I knew about the MOT check but didn't realise you could see history...that's a great tool, much appreciated!
