Help me get a PC, I don't know shit.

Well that was quicker than last time, i go to lunch, come back and the OP is on his bike down to the apple store. excellent. good work.

8meg is 14 per month, with no data cap (that's bethere connection speed)

as for MP3's - do you have a portable player that you have to be able to use?
If not, then iTunes is actually your best bet - it's quicker than it is on windows and is great for organising music etc.

I do indeed have portable MP3 players (three) that I really need to use. Do macs not encode CDs to MP3 format or play back MP3s then?

SUPLEX, how bothered are you about where and what you music is stored? This will let you decide if iTunes is right for you.

Basically, the way it works is that it automatically stores your MP3's on the computer and in theory you never ever need to look at atomicsuplex/documents/music/itunes music/artist/album to find your music, it's just there in the iTunes program(which I never close)

When you put a CD in the drive, iTunes can automatically look up the artist and title, then copy it to your MP3 library on the computer.

Then, when you plug your MP3 player in, it automatically copies your library over and keeps it up to date (you can turn the automatic nature of this off if you like and use drag'n'drop to manage the player)

Does that appeal?
I like it, it means I don't really have to think about it anymore.

I thought itunes encoded the music in a different format to MP3. As long as I can encode MP3s, store them on my computer, move them to my MP3 players and maybe burn them to CD I will be happy.

I used to be good with computers, I used to write my own games using pokes and everything on my vic 20.

I think you may be thinking of music bought from the iTunes *store* - which can be accessed thru the itunes application. Tracks bought from the store can only be played on ipods, not other MP3 players (afaik)...

But in reality nobody buys songs from the store they just download em illegally.

i think yuo would like a mini mac they are easy to use and you can have photoshop on it, and probably you might have a monitor and keyboard lying around that you could use with it.

By default, iTunes uses AAC, but a switch in the preferences changes it to MP3.

And yes, you will probably love garageband :) - At the very least, you could use it to make drum tracks and burn them to CD.

I kind of hoping that the jolly expensive set of drums and recording stuff I have upstairs does it better than somthing free I get with a £500 mac.

OK I have my mini mac and there are a few techno oh nos but I'm guessing I will be able to sort that out in time.

Now I need the internets. How do I get the broad band?

Go to https://www.bethere.co.uk/ and put your postcode or phone number in the box. If you can get it in your area, jump for joy and then select the 8meg or 24meg service.
why them and not virgin?

If I get virgin I can get phone and internet instead of using bt right? This must be cheaper.

What is the difference between 8 and 24 meg?

Virgin are shit. Throttling and crap prices, if you're on the 4mb deal the upload speed is the same, pathetic 40Kb/s as on 2mb. If you're going to go for 24mb then consider it, Be can't hit that in 95% of cases, otherwise don't touch them with a barge pole.

OK Crispy I'm going with what you say again.

I can get Bethere so what do I do now? Do I go for the 24? Do I need some kind of broadband box thing if it's not dial up?

Christ, I am so behind on all this internet shit.

Well it depends what you want to spend and how fast you want your connection. The 24 and the 8 are both very good value for money. It's just one is faster and costs more. If you're not going to be downloading films and TV all the time, I'd go with the 8 and save yourself a few quid.

They will send you the box and everything you need - should be plug in and go. Their phone support is very good and they will hold your hand through the whole thing if you want. But seriously, you plug one cable into your phone socket, one cable into the mac, one cable into the power supply, turn it on and everything should work.

OK I think I have it figured out now but it's going to take up to four weeks for my box thing to arrive. Bummer.

I tuned on my mac the other day to and did some sort of set up thing, can I change all that later or am I stuck with it now?
