help for a complete thicko re wireless routers

DSL - is it a bit like radio ? :hmm:

And decoupled at the exchange so if I shorted out my defunct BT line it wouldn't screw up everyone else's ? ;)

Sorry to derail, but I just want to ask a quick question: when setting up an encrypted wifi network, the router is asking me for a wep key. Is this something I can make up myself, or is it somewhere in the paperwork that came with the router (which I think I threw away)? Ta! :)

Yep, just make it up yourself.

Right as no one has a fucking scooby if your on adsl or cable, please do the following:
Go to http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/existingcustomers/faster/current_service.html THEN scroll to the bottom of the page, select broadband service L (dosent matter what your actual service is, its all the same modems) and click next
ONCE THE NEXT PAGE HAS LOADED DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING, JUST LOOK TO SEE IF YOUR MODEM IS THERE!!!

If your modem (NOT YOUR ROUTER) is on here then you are on CABLE (NOT ADSL)

If you modem is on the link above THEN YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE YOUR ROUTER BACK AND SWAP IT WITH A CABLE ONE...

I don't want to confuse things further but does your wi-fi router and other wi-fi kit (laptops, USB adapters etc) offer WPA security instead of WEP? If so use WPA: it's far more secure.

errr bump!
I am in the garden on laptop but the router thing still doesn't work! whck en I get to the screen asking my password it just clicks back onto it! and i'vedisabled pop up blocker and turned off firewall.. what else is stopping it?
