help for a complete thicko re wireless routers

And forget all that talk about MAC addresses. Virgin/Telewest haven't required this for ages now and I don't know of any ADSL provider that ever has.
ADSL maybe, but I fitted my new cable modem only a month ago :p

It was supposed to be plug and play, but I couldn't be arsed to wait for Virgin to notice I'd connected it.

That was a Virgin supplied cable modem. Not a customer supplied router. :p

ETA In the old days, Telewest required the MAC address of any router or PC attached to the customer side of the modem. They don't now.

Even more reason to phone them - _angel_ is having to use the modem built into it, which Virgin won't have on their database will they ;)

I should have got a virgin supplied modem router shouldn't I?

Maybe I should have a go at removing the installation and starting again from scratch.

:hmm::confused:

You phone Virgin. I have the number somewhere - my (cable) modem melted and they sent me a new one.
The MAC address should be written on it somewhere.

0800 953 9500
m-f 8-22.00

sun 10-17.00

I advise having a refresh IP file on your desktop :-

ipconfig / release
ipconfig /renew

type into notepad and save as "netfix.bat"

otherwise you'll hve to keep rebooting your PC, or type the above in a "DOS window".

What's a MAC address.

There's an IP addy printed on the back of CD but nothing has asked me to supply it so far.

I bet Virgin charge a hefty premium ?

It would have been straight forward if your modem had a CAT5 socket as well as USB.

Angel. Do you have cable TV? Does your broadband come into the house on the same thick wire as your TV?

Or do you have ADSL broadband (your broadband router/modem plugs into your phone socket at some point).

Angel, let us know that^ and the make/model of your router/modem/whatever you have.

Yeah you really need to be clear about what system of Broadband you have.

Is it cable, is it virgin media, does it connect to your TV/Cable line or does your modem/router that works right now connect to your telephone line?

Once we know that we can help.

The MAC address that is being referred to in this thread is about a code on the back of the router, you can use it to set up wireless connections without faffing about too much. It is not the same as the MAC code that ISPs sometimes require to change suppliers.

Ooo I'll take a look. BT Landline and virgin broadband. I am assured we got the right product.

What type of broadband? Does it plug into your phone socket with a splitter type thing (a 'filter')?

er.. erm.it just plugs into a microfilter, one for the phoneline and one for the modem.

Excellent, you have the right parts then :)

Now, do you have your broadband username and password? Virgin should have given you this and you _will_ need it to put into the modem/router.

If your Broadband is cable, then I can't help you, I don't use it never have, I think however that once you get to the stage where you have a connection set up between router and isp that it shouldn't matter much, so I can help you once you are connected (ie all plugged in).

If plugging in your cables, having all the lights on your router working, and turning on your PC doesn't result in a connection. Let us know. There is a huge list to work through if that doesn't work.

virgin dropped the mac address thing a while back apparntly so no need to worry about that.

all thats needed is to be able to authenticate (chap\pap) with a user id and password.

Ok Angel now we know you have a telephone line.

The USB thing you are talking about, that is, I think, a Wireless Adapater, it will make any machine capable of recieving a wireless signal.

Ignore that for now.

You said earlier that you have an ethernet cable. Turn off your PC, turn off your new Router.

Plug the cable that comes from your Telephone line (from the Microfilter) into the back of the Router. It will only fit in one place.

Then plug an Ethernet Cable into slot number 1 of the Router. This is your first ethernet port, then take that cable and plug it into the back of your PC, unless your PC is very very old, it will have an inbuilt Ethernet port. Tell us if this is the case.

Once you have done this, turn on your Router.

Once ALL the lights on your Router are on (Your Internet Light may not come on, but you should have an Ethernet Light and an ADSL light and both of those should be on, if they are not, let us know. then turn on your PC.

You should now have some sort of a connection, but no ADSL connection as your Router cannot connect as it has no Username or Password.

Once your PC is on, open Firefox/IE, type into the address bar

192.168.1.1

You may have to check your manual or paperwork, but that is usually correct.

If it is correct, you will get a page that introduces you to your new Router, it will have various different pieces of information but one of them will read something like:

ADSL Connection

Click on that. It should take you to a page where you can put in your Username and Password. Do so, it should be amongst your paperwork.

Now you should be able to connect to the internet through the ethernet cable and your new router.

Let us know if it doesn't work.

The first half of your post only applies to cable broadband (never needed a username/pass). The second only applies to ADSL(never needed MAC).

^This.

You said you had an IP address on the CD, if it looks like the one me and Pingu and I think ymu you posted, ie 192.168.x.x then that is your Routers IP address and that is how you get access to the settings of your Router.

just quoting form virgins support site...

i remember setting up my fiorst wireless network on a C&W cable connection when C&W were being twats and not helping at all with mac address registration. - it did auto update - in 3-5 days which made troubleshooting interesting. eventually had to clone the mac address of the "primary PC" onto the router and then manually edit the mac address of the NIC in the PC

I know, it used to be a real faff but I guess that was their way of only keeping authorised kit on their n/w. Angel has ADSL though so it's not an issue :)
