help for a complete thicko re wireless routers

Please help, the technical support will be closed until tuesday

I have a PC and modem virgin modem (broadband). I have a laptop all set to go with wifi. We bought the wireless ADSL modem router with wireless adapter.

The instructions don't make sense.

what is the correlation between my existing modem and the new router. IS this a replacement? Does it link in somehow?

I have done everything it asked in the (badly worded) instructions. If I disconnect my virgin modem I don't get internet access nor does the screen come up about my internet connection like it says it should.

What have I done wrong??

Keep the virgin modem as it is. The cable that used to go from modem to PC should now go modem to router.
The router should have a socket marked as the input (on mine it's called "internet")
You need to add an extra cable from router output to your desktop PC (unless you have wireless adapter for the desktop)
The laptop obviously doesn't need any cabling.

One important step - make sure you power up the virgin modem before the router.
Unplug both, then switch on the virgin modem. Wait a minute or so (or until all the lights stop flashing and you have "ready" light) and then connect the router.
If you ever have to switch either off, make sure you power up the modem first before router.
If you power up the router first (or both at the same time) it often won't work.

It very much depends on the router and the modem.

The router may or may not have a cross over port if its ADSL WiFi. Its expecting the input to come from the phone socket by default. I think some have to be configured so that one port is the input and that needs to be broadcast over the Wifi.

yeah the reason the instructions dont make sence is beacuse you got an ADSL router when you need a CABLE router (not an ADSL one!)

Its an easy mistake to make and really the person who sold it to you should have asked you what your isp was!

so yeah as keypulse says you'll need to take it back and swap it!

Virgin probably won't do any technical support for a router they didn't supply. They took over from Telewest who certainly didn't. They also charge a premium rate for internet support.

Check through your router's manual for trouble-shooting tips (or the replacement one if it is the wrong type). You should be able to plug it into your set-top box and then go to 168.192.0.1 (or summat similar - see manual) to set up the router. You might need to change some settings - like dynamic vs statis IP and stuff.

tbh.. nobody in their right mind would.

I've got a BT landline and a virginnet broadband connection. I think we've got the right thing.:hmm:

So not a Virgin Media set top box thingy?

Your wireless card should pick up the router. If it does, you can access the router via an address like 168.192.0.1. The manual should explain the settings you need for different types of broadband connection.

Sure, but when the router they'll sell you has been crippled and will only allow one computer to connect to it (defeating a large part of the point of having wireless in the first place), it's still pretty shit.

OK then.

In order to use the modem part of the new gizmo you'll have to phone customer support with the MAC address so they can "discover " it..

... otherwise, as said, bypass the modem part if that's possible...

have you done ANYTHING in the way of seeting up the modem router...ie you will need to set up you username/password...this will have to be down via WIRE.

What is the name & model numbers of the modem router?

I inputted all the information that was on the CD cover yes.

In a bit I'll got back and see where to wire up my existing modem and take them both out and put them back in as suggested.

I'm just not sure where or how my existing modem goes into the router.

Oh and I have got one of those yellow cabling things ethernet doo dah.

.

The cable will not fit anyway at all into the back of the router. It's a usb cable and none of the ports on it are.

I'm baffled.

THAT :D

telephone connector>modemrouter>ethernet cable >computer.

You then have to get to the GUI of the router via 192.168.*.*(which depends on yer router..mine in 192.168.0.1) or it could be 10.0.0.1(or summit)...put the numbers into a Browser addy bar...most will then allow you load in with username: admin password: password...then you need to put in details into Settings to get router to get on Net.

In which case you'll need to use the modem in the router so will have to phone technical support with the hardware (MAC) address.

some routers will aloow you to clone a mac address or manually edit it.

firstly what make and model of router is it?

The new modem tech support? (not open) do I carry on paying virgin? Are they still my supplier?
You phone Virgin. I have the number somewhere - my (cable) modem melted and they sent me a new one.
The MAC address should be written on it somewhere.

I advise having a refresh IP file on your desktop :-

ipconfig / release
ipconfig /renew

type into notepad and save as "netfix.bat"

otherwise you'll hve to keep rebooting your PC, or type the above in a "DOS window".

from the setup manuals the setup looks fairly straightforward tbh

there is a setup wizzard that should take care of the techy stuff

ip seems to be 192.168.1.1 btw

quick question

do you have an ethernet connection in your PC?

Angel. Do you have cable TV? Does your broadband come into the house on the same thick wire as your TV?

Or do you have ADSL broadband (your broadband router/modem plugs into your phone socket at some point).

And forget all that talk about MAC addresses. Virgin/Telewest haven't required this for ages now and I don't know of any ADSL provider that ever has.
