Help eliminating Greek islands

Only ever been there once, was very enjoyable but again where i stayed a little bit of a hike downhill to the beach, in a resort near Kusadasi. (pm me if you want the details)

Have you thought about the Canaries as an alternative. Should still be hot in September and not too hilly (at least around the beaches!)

Are the Canaries part of Spain?

I'm looking at the Dalaman region of Turkey at the moment

Of the Greek Islands I've only been to Rhodes & Syros.

Rhodes was lovely, stayed in the most southernmost resort there was called Gennardi both times- south of Lindos & nowhere near as hilly! I don't know if it still operates as a resort, and iirc only Thompson went there but it was quiet enough, and hardly anyone on the beach, which is shingle. Direct flights to Rhodes as well, 4 1/4 hours I think.

Syros was also lovely but a palaver to get to - flight to Athens (airport was an absolute sh*thole, Athens stinks), and a ferry from the port of Piraeus to the island, another 4 hours. Its a tiny little island where apparently the better off Athenian Greeks holiday, it too was relatively quiet, the beach where I stayed wasn't much cop although the apartment owner took us to some lovely sandy beaches in his boat. As an island they do a lot of fishing and as a result many of the restaurants specialise in fish dishes which were all fresh and delicious.

There are so many Greek Islands to choose from though, so long as you do a bit of reading you're bound to find one that suits. Enjoy! :)

Oh, has anyone mentioned anything to you about the sewerage system in Greece?

Yes, they are Spanish (i think) owned islands of the west coast of Africa.

No idea about the Dalaman region, that's more to the south from where i was staying. Sorry, no help there!

Can't go to Spain so Canaries are out.

Thinking of the Ovacik region as it seems to have quieter beaches (probably dead :D) but seem to be a bus ride away from Marmaris and Olu Deniz

Obviously this is all theoretical as I probably won't be able to get anything and it'll be back to looking at Greece

It's out of this world isn't it? My lasting memories include the smell of sulphur from belching yellow clouds forced out of cracks and crevices, water boiling in pockmarks on the ground, and my baseball shoes getting hot enough to slightly melt the soles. And the buzz of knowing that although it's been dormant and plugged for a while, it still has seismic potential :D I absolutely loved it :D

I took huge chunks of that sulphurous rock home.

Weirdly it burns and melts when you put a match to it, and stinks of course.

Which made me think what carnage it would have been dropping a lit match on the ground in some of the more sulphurous areas of the caldera...

Did you visit the little village, and the church and stuff?

Minnie I just got an annual travel insurance policy for £15 (via moneysupermarket.com). It may be cheaper to go a bit later and buy new travel insurance. Just a thought.

The islands I have been to and liked are: Lefkas (sometimes called Lefkada), Samos, Tilos, Symi, Rhodes (but don't go anywhere near Falaraki!), Agistri (tiny island near Athens) and Kefalonia.

I just recently got back from Crete and hated it. I'm sure there are lovely bits but, even though we went to stay in a small village, there were Brits getting completely hammered and chucking each other in the pool every night . Also, 20 mins down the road the nearest resort area had pubs with names like Prince of Wales

I've got a Lonely Planet Greek Islands you can borrow if that would help.

Also, if you decide to go with a package I've found that Olympic tend to be a bit cheaper.

Never been to Turkey but want to go. Might well be cheaper since it's out of the 'eurozone'.

Can't get travel insurance (or rather I'm not even bothering to try). They won't renew because he's had two operations on his leg this year.

I rang 60 or 70 places last year to try and get him insurance because of his medical conditions.

Ah I see. Insurance companies really are fuckers aren't they?

The Med is tideless.

Not completely. I once got well soaked on Corfu when sleeping on the beach. During the night off-shore winds raised the slight tide so that the water line moved up at least 15 meters, which was about halfway up my sleeping bag.

Right, thanks for your help everyone.

We're booking somewhere in Turkey that's not near a beach and is up in the mountains. :o

Goes totally against everything we're after but Olu Deniz is totally full

It's in Ovacik and it's very steep apparently. We have to get buses to the beach and to any nightlife, but it only cost £265 for B&B for a week. :D

Hope b/f lasts the 4 hour flight (not sure if that's classed as short-haul) and the big walk to hotel :o

Absolutely beautiful bit of the world. Ovacik is basically part of Hisaronu, which has got plenty of nightlife etc of its own. Its too damn steep to walk down to Oludeniz from there, but there is plenty of public transport. Rather more than a bus ride from Marmaris, but only 10 mins from Fethiye.
