Help! Baby Shower Advice

I went to one a couple of weeks ago and did up a bath time set...all packed into a lovely ( I liked it...lime green) baby bath. A soft embroidered towel on the bottom and then heaped it with baby bath, cotton wool, sponge, rubber duck, baby toothbrush and toothpaste and a sleepsuit. She is a close friend and I didnt feel extravagant, but she was equally pleased with the six pack of body suits mentioned above, that someone else brought along....

I've just realised that this isn't about a "shower" but a "showing". It must be an american thing if they get the spelling mixed up like that. (Forgive me if I am wrong and it is actually about a baby shower ? )

Nope it's "shower" - you invite people over to "shower you with gifts".

I remember my mates turning up with wee presents but I wouldn't have felt comfortable inviting them over for that. (Though possibly the tradition is for friends-of-the-mum-to-be to arrange it which isn't quite so bad, though it is really if you're obliging them to do it).

I went to one of these, but it was a social event rather than a pressie-giving one, and the guests were asked to spend no more than £5 if they chose to bring a gift..and the small print said that a bottle of wine or a box of cakes was most acceptable!
