Help - any ideas for a present for my mum

Well this is a successful thread. :D

Sorry - she's not easy to buy for, which is why I always end up in a flap about it :D

Well I wouldn't be in such a flap if I actually planned in advance and asked her what she wanted

I'm going to go to Stamfords in a few mins and hope I come back with something...

And she doesn't really like posh fancy things.

Some of the random presents she's bought me in previous years:

-a fun-fur cat-shaped draught excluder
-a sort of horse-blanket like shawl thing
-a marble pyramid (??)

:hmm::hmm::hmm:

Strange :D

A leather purse?

Book suggestions:

This Heart of Darkness by Harry Thompson
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

Why don't you ask her what she wants?

Because at this late stage it looks bad. It would look good if I'd done it 2-3 weeks ago. Now it just looks like "hey mum, I've given this no thought whatsoever and now it's your birthday already!" Which is true, but I'm hoping to disguise the fact.

It's like the "garage flowers on your anniversary" school of present-giving.

something from the natural history museum shop? or make a gift voucher/iou redeemable for a gig of her choice? will look thoughfull rather than last minute, maybe with a cd of folk music she likes, or from the year of her birth or something?

I like those ideas :)

Congratulations feyr, you win the thread.

However I've just been out and bought a couple of travel books and some collapsable cups for the campervan.

But I'll save those up for next time.

What an amazing collection of suggestions.

Minnie can you do a gift suggestion thread closer to the festive season? T'would be good.

I'm having the same problem with my mum - it's her birthday on 3rd, but luckily I have until Sunday to find something.

I have asked her what she wants, and she said "Oh, I don't know."

I don't want to spend more than £20, I'm thinking of getting her some kind of pendant but she has loads of jewellery already. I won't have much time on Saturday for shopping as I am getting my haircut, so if I can't find anything, I will have to offer to take her shopping, and then I'll end up spending more than I want to.

I'm not mean, I'm just poor at the moment.

Beeboo gave more information on her mum (ie. likes/dislikes)

She is 65, she likes jewellery, she's good at painting/drawing (although she doesn't do much now) she likes films (mainstream) books (thrillers/biographies/horror) music, handbags (can't get her one of those as my sister already has) dogs, cats.

She doesn't really wear make up very often or like toiletries and stuff.

I was looking at mugs, but I've given her umpteen mugs in the past (I've given her umpteen of everything, come to think of it!)
