Hello from the Pearl Jam concert at the O2

I only saw two Gomez songs. They seemed OK.

It's funny, isn't it, the way that it isn't enough for some people to not like some music? They have to try to persuade everybody else not to like it either. Especially ironic, actually, when they probably haven't really listened to anything produced by the band in question for 10 or 15 years.

Pearl Jam's last... ooh... five albums have not been stuff to listen to lightly and casually. They're complex, contrapuntal, polyphonous affairs that make astonishing use of disonance and asonance, tension and resolution, tonal expression. They blend Vedder's guitar-like voice with McCready's voice-like guitar. I know that the first time I listen to one of their albums, I probably won't like it either. I also know that after five listens, it will be embedded in my soul and it will move me like no other music does. Not to mention that I really think that McCready might genuinely be the greatest guitarist of them all.

But hey, don't let that bother you. Just go on writing-off that which you have no clue about because it makes you feel better.

this is a music forum, where people give their opinions about music. and i don't think anyone is trying to persuade other people not to like pearl jam. although they should be, cos they are really lame. (i know this because i saw coverage of them live from reading (i think?) last year so i'm well up to date with them  )

Anyway: 165 original songs in their back catalogue to choose from, 20 000 fans who know every word to every song in the arena, a 2hr 45min set that ran the gamut of songs from their first album 20 years ago to their new album out in a few months and a set of six musicians that are at the very peak of their profession as performers. Personally, I thought it was about as good an experience as it is possible to get.

I must say, I was at my mate's house recently, and they were playing some later pearl jam stuff, and it was vastly superior to the stadium-rock-pretending-to-be-grunge which made them famous. It was almost garagey and raw.

oh grow a pair. People have ripped the piss out of music in these forums since they existed. If they didn't, it'd be a very bland place indeed.

"I like the new XX album."

"well, it's not to my taste but I'm glad you're enjoying it"

<end of thread>

I get the shit ripped out of some of the stuff i like all the time, and take it in good spirit.

Get over yourself.

Opinions from a position of ignorance are worthless. And opinions that form nothing more than personal preference are dull.

so why post in the music or books etc forum at all, since unless you want a simple exchange of tour dates and album titles, opinion is what you're going to get.

as for the "position of ignorance" jibe - I saw their first London show, have seen them since and not only once owned Ten but have done a reasonable job of listening to their stuff over the years - I like my opinions to be reasonably well-informed.

And it's my reasonably well-informed opinion that it's overwrought faux-earnest wank performed by a bunch of hairy midgets.

well informed but fake non mainstream posturing if you ask me.

with your blooming shllec albums and your hatred of anything good:mad::mad:

you make me sick.

Judging Pearl Jam by saying you owned Ten is like judging Bruce Springsteen by saying you owned The Wild, The Innocent and The E-Street Shuffle. It was a great album, but it had precious little to do with what came next.

I just started a thread because I was actually in the arena, I was excited and I thought I'd share that excitement. How silly of me!

tremendous selective quoting there, kabbes. Very poor show..

that's fine - i've done much the same. People will agree, or disagree. That's fine, it's how the forum functions and there's no malice in it. As I've already pointed out, the alternative would be very dull indeed.

checking back, there's nothing in this thread that jibes about Pearl Jam fans or kabbes personally (aside from some initial surprise at him being at a gig) - it was all directed at the music itself. Which is as it should be.

Hey, if you can't take the response to the criticism, don't dole out the criticism. Don't post something that amounts to little more than "This thing is shit" and then be surprised when you get a robust response.

Kabbes. You're arguing with people who think Girls Aloud are the pinnacle of musical achievement. i wouldn't bother.

As far as the show went, was the whole gig seating only? That sucks if so. I know they got freaked when some kids died in the pit at roskilde. No fault of theirs as far as i know but it would be shame if thats led to seating only shows.

No, it's true. They are a bunch of hairy midgets. Except Mike McCready, who is a balding non-midget. And Stone Gossard, who is a skinny rake.

They are not a good-looking band. Fortunately, I don't judge music by what the musicians look like. I leave that to the Girls Aloud fans.

a robust response is fine, a suggestion that in some way criticism itself is unfair or unecessary isn't.

It's awfully simple.

Glad you enjoyed it kabbes. I was vicariously enjoying the start of the thread :D What's O2 like as a venue?

Oh no, the floor was all standing. It was hairy at one point though -- Eddie had to stop and ask everybody to take three paces backwards. Which was an awesome sight from up in the gods, where I was.

Which - and this is a sincere point - must be a horrible situation for him to be in after Roskilde. The band must really live in fear of any crowd situations getting out of hand again.
