Heinz Hidden Veg range

They're not starving though! It'd never get that bad!

Fair enough, but you give a child a plate of say, chicken, peas, carrots and mash. They’d simply eat the chicken and mash and leave the rest. So your right I suppose its not like they are starving but they still aren’t eating as much as they should be and they definitely still aren’t eating veg.

no but he's saying if they didn't eat the veg they couldn't eat anything else until they did!

if they really don't like it, they won't eat it, but they will try more sutff and are more likely to find out there is green sutff that is edible

Nah my mrs kid wont eat any veg, and all her mates (who were brought up in a village rather than a city….) eat anything, they all love it. But she wont touch anything that isn’t a light brown colour and from a packet.

At least try some or have a few mouthfuls...

They put the tiiiiniest bit in their mouth then spit it out and say 'eerergh' regardless :)

I’ve just told the mrs to write out a statement absolving her of any responsibility when her kid grows up fat and ill and get the kid to sign it :D

when my brother was little he wouldn't eat anything white. nothing.

when my mum cooks a roast now, all he'll eat is the stuffing and the gravy.

he buys chicken curry microwave meals and takes out the bits of chicken, eating only the sauce.

when he was little my mum tried the you can't have anything else until you eat this approach and she said, after a day or two, she just had to give in cos he literally would have starved himself. he used to have that swolen tummy thing that is a symptom of malnutrition. seriously, some kids just won't have it.

If you dont want your kid ending up on freaky eaters:D, then the compromise you can have a bit of this if you just TRY a lil bit of that is needed.....The only reason they keep up is when they know they can get their own way and KNOw their parents will cave in....

Food issues are never about the food themselves and always about control..

That's not exactly what I meant - I'd say they could eat something boring like bread OR they could eat something more exciting, just as long as they ate their veg too.

It starts off about the food, as in they prefer this over that, then refuse to eat that cos they want this instead.

Then it moves to control as in 'I want you to eat this but you dont want to'. So its the parent trying to control what the kid is eating based on whats good for them. The kid is merely resisting the parental control on what it prefers to eat which lets face it, we'd all do if someone tried to make us eat something we didnt like!

Have you watched freaky eaters??:D

All the parents interviewed were paraniod they would starve so caved in and let them eat just what they wanted...Somehow they thought it reflected them as bad parents.......

the control things interesting see. cos that's a big factor in eating disorders as well. i wonder if the two are related somehow.

Tbh I hated vegetables (except peas and carrots) til I was about.....hang on I still hate fucking vegetables. I like parsnips now but apart from those three thats about it.

Most kids will grow out of it anyway, but maybe it was my parents constant trying to make me eat veg that has made me still not like it to this day? :hmm:

I was vegetarian between the ages of 6 and 12 as well. My old lady had a fucking nightmare :D

they don't always believe adults who say stuff is good, they will beleive other kids a lot mroe readily.

Maybe because they have learned the hard way about things like "hiding"?

Trust & a form of 2-way relationship is also a fairly useful factor in dealing with kids IME.

innit.

we don't do hidden veg. we do let the kids choose about 1/3 of the fruit and veg and have a choice in what their meals are and help cook them.

If kids are used to eating veg from the word go, and don't pick up on adult expectations that they'll think an item rancid, they won't know it is a bargaining tool. And they'll just eat it. If you need to "hide" vegetables, then you've already fucked up on this score.

this imo^^

Fine til they go to school, then suddenly they want crisps, fast food and sweets like their mates. It's never ending, you have to keep on being imaginative and encouraging. No such thing as sorting it early and then sitting back feeling smug, it's just not that simple.

damn :(

I was feeling well smug there.
