Heating and Boiler Question

I have never known it this cold.. The radiators have never come on at the frost setting before!!!!

So much for global warming!

When I woke at 6 this morning and the heating had been off all night (comes on at 7) I worried that the pipes might freeze. What stops them freezing when all the heating is off?

So in very cold weather you are suppose to keep it on all the time???

(I realise how little I know about heating)
