He REALLY is a transport nerd - I liked the throw away - where the shuttle used to run, discontinued in the 1950s - nice..!!

I never was quite sure that Upminster was a real place, but was happy that Ian Dury was Lord of it.. :D

I saw the thread title and for a moment I thought the Crossrail fares for the Heathrow spur had finally been announced, and the news was good :(

Just dead jealous. Fantastic public transport that Londoners get compared to the shit that the rest of the country has to struggle to use and pay a fortune for.

Indeed. £1.50 won't even get you a couple of stops on the bus in most places outside the M25

The kid is just back from London trips and is amazed by the public transport. Says of our local transport (west country, First Bus + various trains) "its not a real bus service" and is right, its fuckin crap, overpriced crap. Unsuitable for purpose. This will stop the kid ever voting tory thank goodness.

I just watched this, because I too am a bit of a geek. Geoff and Vicki must have visited these on All The Stations (I didn't keep up with every vid), but now I kinda want to as well

Interesting overview, but Marshal and Pipe also have many vids covering the Parliamentary and least used stations...

    (Stunning musical episode!)
    and some weirdness

She's lovely, isn't she? But for me what really struck home was the way they interacted. It obviously wasn't plain sailing all the time, but there was a sense of two very individual people working (and playing) together in a really constructive, collaborative way. I'd take hours of that over any soppy romantic comedy film any day of the week...!

There are some real quirks of pricing on the tube. In a similar vein to the OP I used to get the tube from Richmond to Heathrow and it only cost something like £1.50. Problem was though it'd take an hour as the route was via Hammersmith. Something very counter-intuitive about travelling in the wrong direction to reach your final destination.

Can I join in just to boast? I went on the Paddington to South Ruislip Chiltern line. Got stuck at broken signals or something for 40 mins on the way. Got a refund from Chiltern (yeah cool story, i know). Anyway I reckon I'm the only person in the word to get a delay refund of a parliamentary train. Aware that there are more noble things to aim for.

It's pretty cool you can get between those stations for £1.50 but man what a load of hassle with all the changing to avoid zone 1. Add some luggage into that from Heathrow and I think I'd rather pay the extra couple of quid or whatever it is.

This journey can be done for nowt , a few slightly older friends (over 60) have a free oyster card for zones 1-6. They are still working so get free travel to work  . I'm still 7 years short of this travel bonus. It will probably be cancelled before I get one

You don't have to change to avoided Zone 1. I've done it from Romford via Jubilee and District lines and always been charged 1.50.

Why was he faffing about changing trains all the time to get to Upminster then?

I didn't realise that's what he'd done until I replied to your post. I was hoping to prove it but Oyster only lets you see last three months activity. I did it on Jan 24th and Feb 12th 2017 both ways (ie. four times altogether) and remember checking and being chuffed it had only cost me three quid there and back.

I believe you. In fact I always believed it made no difference how you got back to Zone 6, as long as you started and ended there, the fare was the same. I thought it was odd that he wouldn't just Piccadilly line it all the way to Holborn and then make one change to get the central line to Loughton to prove the point.

This is something else that annoys me. You could be a sixty year old hedge fund manager in London and still get free tube travel in the morning peak.

Elsewhere in the UK you have to be 65 and it is local buses only and in many cases only after 9.30.

    Because he's not over 60?

Disabled people can get free Oystercards too. I have one. But last time I came back from Heathrow it took two and a half hours and required several changes and a taxi, because I was in a wheelchair. The guard at Heathrow wouldn't let me into the tube station until he'd planned out a route for me and phoned ahead to the stations to arrange "assistance." The stepfree route required six changes so I wanted to just go the normal route, which has one change and is a short journey, and drag myself up and down the stairs. He told me that if I tried to do that he'd report me and I'd lose my Oystercard and be banned from the network.

The "assistance" was actually just people pointing us in the right direction at each of the many interchanges - my daughter had to manage both me and the wheelchair and the staff refused to help with either. In the end they expected us to walk twenty minutes to get to a bus stop (daughter pushing me and wheeling the suitcase for twenty minutes after a journey that had already taken two and a half hours) so we had to pay for a taxi that ended up costing the same as just booking a minicab all the way from Heathrow. :(

So kind of a similar journey to that bloke in the OP but for very different reasons :D
