LA Takedown is far far better.
I finally saw
LA Takedown for the first time today. Whilst I respect that you have your opinion, I just find it hard to believe that you mean that.
To me their seemed to be a distinct lack of structure and pace to it. It was definitely interesting to see the
Heat storyline pared down (losing the stepdaughter subplot, no bearer bonds pay off, skirting over Waingro's extracurricular deviancy, missing out Chris' problems, skipping the second-act score etc), but it lacked a bounce. And the acting just seemed to be distinctly daytime soap level. That said, as well as the word-for-word, shot-for-shot prefiguring, it was curious to see how Pacino and De Niro seemed to follow Plank and MacArthur's take on their respective characters (and how the wardrobe and set design teams for
Heat appeared to follow the cues given by those of
LA Takedown so closely too).
Some of the elements that were changed between the two were a little curious - the swapping of Michael's tic from 'slick' to 'sport' for example.
The use of day shoots over night was a big loss atmospherically, I think, but still, several of the set pieces were still staged very effectively despite the lower budget and bright light (the post-score discussion in the diner, the bank heist).
Perhaps with a more weathered, more threatening presence from both thief and thieftaker, and with a grimier, grimmer script, it might have worked better - say tonally more like
Thief, and with less big name distraction than in
Heat.
