Heat...

Really, really such a dull film. I saw it when it came out and I was about 15/16. All the way through I was sort of panicking because I didn't like it, then I make a life defining decision just to fess up and tell all my mates that I thought it was shit - throwing off the shackles of teen conformity for the first time sorta thing. They all ripped the piss out of me and said I was like a girl. Some of them said I was like their sister.

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells got a biiiiiiiiiiig double thumbs up from me after that chastening experience.

LA Takedown is far far better.

I finally saw LA Takedown for the first time today. Whilst I respect that you have your opinion, I just find it hard to believe that you mean that.

To me their seemed to be a distinct lack of structure and pace to it. It was definitely interesting to see the Heat storyline pared down (losing the stepdaughter subplot, no bearer bonds pay off, skirting over Waingro's extracurricular deviancy, missing out Chris' problems, skipping the second-act score etc), but it lacked a bounce. And the acting just seemed to be distinctly daytime soap level. That said, as well as the word-for-word, shot-for-shot prefiguring, it was curious to see how Pacino and De Niro seemed to follow Plank and MacArthur's take on their respective characters (and how the wardrobe and set design teams for Heat appeared to follow the cues given by those of LA Takedown so closely too).

Some of the elements that were changed between the two were a little curious - the swapping of Michael's tic from 'slick' to 'sport' for example.

The use of day shoots over night was a big loss atmospherically, I think, but still, several of the set pieces were still staged very effectively despite the lower budget and bright light (the post-score discussion in the diner, the bank heist).

Perhaps with a more weathered, more threatening presence from both thief and thieftaker, and with a grimier, grimmer script, it might have worked better - say tonally more like Thief, and with less big name distraction than in Heat.

Its at least half an hour to long but the bits i like i really really like.

The shoot out is class, the first robbery is class, the bit in the docks with the counter surveillance is class.

Decent enough film. But could so easily have been a truly great film.

As a Face off between two of Hollywood's finest, it's definitely a bit of a disappointment, (Pacino comes out on top BTW ) . I think Mann, is quite visually based as well, so it comes across as glossy high grade porno rather than anything brain-wise meaty.
Rubbish though? No.

Like so many Michael Mann films, technically brilliant, visually lovely, and about as deep as an inhabitant of Flatland.

CF; Miami Vice, Collateral, Public Enemies etc etc etc.
