head set "play"...

It can just be tightened a bit but you need a headset spanner to adjust it (you'll have noticed they're big fucking nuts, I doubt you have a spanner that size lying around). That'll cost you about a score. Might as well just take it to the bike shop. A fucked headset is about the most dangerous thing that can go wrong with a bike as it can really fuck your steering so get it sorted properly.

thanks..i guessed that would be the answer...i managed to remove a cross threaded bottom bracket due to tips garnered from experienced riders,as well as how to remove a cassete without special tools...two out of three 'aint bad, thanks again...

Right then!

It sounds like a pretty common problem.

does it clunk when you lift the front wheel off the ground?

it is more "forward travel" when the front brake is applied...the whole bike seems to "play" about what should surely be a fixed point?..there is a slight drop as you suggest...

Yeah,

It can be fixed but its a bit of an arse ache.

You need to line up the whole thing before you tighten it,

If you dont then it just clunks out of place again.

Bugger it i'm off to bed,

first ever driving lesson tomorrow.

Should be fun in the fog.

:)
I had a few driving lessons... they were shit, I almost ran over a 10 year old kid, nearly wrote off the car and wheel spun while pulling off at a roundabout  Driving is for losers :)

At 27 I thought i'd got away with not driving.

Then I go and get the missus up the spout and she insists i learn.

*note to self, spray on tits*

Welcome to the boards frimley :)

If you're going to DIY you need two head set spanners so you can hold one nut in place whilst tightening the other else you'll compress the races onto the bearings

you should be able to get a pair for under £20, although it's a long time since I bought mine so this could be guff

it is a mountain bike. the stem is secured by two hex bolts.another hex bolt is located on top of the stem, presumably governing steering mechanism safety.apart from that, there are two large "lock rings"(for want of a better description)at the top and bottom of steering/fork points of entry.there appears to be little to attend to without pulling things apart...

This sounded like an AHeadset until you mentioned the lockrings which are only on threaded headsets...are the two hex bolts securing the stem to the steerer tube or handlebars?
