Hawkwind they are actually quite...

Pingu said:
On reflection I have seen hawkwind about 10-12 times and not once was i not off my face

I do recall sitting on the tunnel bus back from liverpool singing orgone accumulator and being told to shutthe fuck up by the bus driver. so Me and some others who had been to the gig started up with a rendition of reefer madness... we got kicked off the bus cos we kept pointing at the driver and goning "stole my stash".

this for some reason has just come to the front of my mind with an alarming clarity.
Hehehehe. Are you also a Birconian? The tunnel bus?

i lived in wallaby at the time

though I spent ages 7 to 12 in the north end (just up the road from the blood tub)

Oh, dear! :D

I'm afraid I too must admit to a huge Hawkwind collection, including many of the rarities that even record dealers claim "only exist in the books" :D

I have also lost count of how many times I've seen them since the 70's but certainly more than is physically good for me & yes, sometimes they are utter shite & sometimes mere crap but brilliant with it. Must be the drugs? :D

They sent me a new CD just the other week but I've not had the courage to listen to it yet. Might just go & fire it up. :)

Ah OK. I'm from Tranmere. I'd be far too scared to go to the North End :)

There wasn't a tunnel bus back the first time I saw 'em. We came back on the ferry. I'd taken my first ever acid (I was about 12 or 13 and the acid was *very* powerful) I remember looking out over the water, watching the stars do weird stuff and thinking about starships and wanting to revert to barbarism - which was always a concern with early Hawkwind gigs :)

Along with the other old hippies on this thread, I saw them last week too, and they were bloody great. Far more together than I've ever seen them (and I've seen them a lot over the last 20-odd years), and absolutely excellent. :)

I'm pretty sure I saw them at the Wheatsheaf in Dunstable more than once, but that was during my *hazy period* so I can't be sure.

They were pants, but good.

Nope. :)

It was within spitting distance, though.

So is it OK if I call in Dustbinfull like I nearly did originally?

only if you can think of something equally pithy to call Welwyn Garden City (where I am from :o ). I don't think being born in Muswell Hill excuses me when we moved before I was 1. :o

I'm almost certain it was the Wheatsheaf. :p

The Wheatsheaf, Dunstable

Dunstable's number 1 live music venue, The Wheatsheaf is licensed to entertain 100 people, and over the years the pub has seen Marillion, Gay Bikers On Acid, The Hamsters, John Otway, as well as most of the members of Hawkwind. A genuine and friendly venue, there's live music here every Saturday night, and bands from all areas are welcome to book a gig. On Fridays it's Rock DJ night, and from March 2003 there's an original band night starting up on Wednesdays - contact the venue for details. When you visit, look out for AJ, Lorraine, many regulars and various cats, one of which is actually invisible...

I betcha £5 that hawkwind never played there :)

Lemmy might have and various members might have but they were too big as a band to fit into the wheatsheaf, all the crowd pullers went to the queensway hall

I saw John Ottway there, he could fit, not hawkwind though

I lived at the place from age 13 until my mum turned up 2 years later and told them how old I was :D

I managed to get away with going to the Queensway Hall for a bit longer before my mum cottoned on and saw Judas Priest and Planet Gong there too :o

and the the Sex Pistols

got pulled down years ago

looks a bit crap in the photo but for dunstable it was cutting edge :D

Well yes. Sex Pistols gigs. I showed up at Mr Digbys. they didn't

Supercharge played, which was OK 'cos they were pretty lively.

Next time they were scheduled it was at Erics. We showed, they didn't.

Third time, it was announced they'd play Erics. They showed up, but we fooled 'em and stayed at home.

I'm told they were incompetent and useless.

Well I never recall going to Queensway Hall, so it must have just been odd sundry members of Hawkwind masquerading as Hawkwind. :o

The place was PACKED!

you could be right

memory's a funny thing ;)

I wonder if I met you?

that would be so weird but if you spent a lot fo time at the wheatsheaf it's quite likely

I bet you went to the civic hall and just don't remember or have it mixed up with somewhere else

I remember that tune freebird was on the jukebox (I hate that tune now but at the time I liked it :o ) at the wheatsheaf and the landlord had bells palsy so that half his face was paralysed.

Funnyt the things that stick in your mind eh?

And the Cherry Tree in Welwyn Garden City (my old regular hangout) is now a Waitrose. :(

What is it with the rock venues of our yoof?

(it was rumoured that Led Zep played at the Cherry Tree in their early days, but that was WAY before my time).
