I seem to recall a mention that they had Sam Fox on lead vocals when they did "Master of the Universe" at the Astoria.

Or was that someone's hallucination?

Festography!!

God I fucking hate Hawkwind ... bad experience once listening to them whilst on acid

Had at least one GOOD experience while on mushrooms though ...

I believe that was at the last Police-untroubled Stonehenge Peoples Free Festival

("All June, 1984", according to the badly drawn cardboard signs :D )

I can't now remember a damned thing about that gig. I'm fairly sure I was there mind .. as were various members of the Ozrics, according to at least one member of them ... ;)

It inspired the Ozrics to trouble festivals for the next 20 + years!

And I never remembered anything about what the fuck Hawkwind played (doubtless 25 to 55 minute noodling solos?). My "memory" failed from about an hour after the end of the set.

Be aware though, from my mushroom consciousness (22 and a half years old :p ), that the thing was classic!!

I went to a very tiny Glastonbury festival, a third of the size it was in the nineties, a couple of days later. The rest is history ... ;)

It might have been me that mentioned it. It was at an anniversary gig at the Academy with everyone who'd ever been in Hawkwind who was still alive playing. Was a bit of a shock when Sam Fox bounded out. My mate thought she was Toyah, but that was his halucination ;) :D

Great gig that. Lemmy played for ages

Future history of this coming summer and (I hope) many more to come, as well

Hawkwind are TEH Festival band ... and so are any who know how to do festivals live as well as them .

Saw them at Off the Tracks**. By then (2005 or 2006? Not sure) it was just Dave Brock and some session musicians. But they rocked. In a beer and weed and mushroom and acid-friendly type way  x 10,000

**for the first time live for me in round about 22 years :o

As well as owning the (now somewhat rare?) HW own-label record of that concert. Thanks to the generousity another poster here, I also have a copy of the entire unedited recording of that show. Including all the chat, mixer problems & even the generator failling! One of the most madly rambling concerts I have ever heard from them & I've seen Hawkwind a lot - Indeed, more than is probably physically good for me! :D

I have however longsince sworn to avoid buying any HW release with yet another version of Brainstorm on it. Think I stopped at @18 different versions.

I was also at the last Hawkfest & that was pretty good, even though bloody Tarrantism had worked themselves on to the bill. How about adding that to the Urban Callendar for later this year?

Ahh, the god old days
Iirc, wasn't Nik Turner/HAwkwind pretty instrumental in setting those up ie it was their sound system?

He always did.!

I used to think it was because he'd forgotten the score and couldn't remember how to finish. :D

I had some great times seeing Hawkwind. Always best when Nick Turner played with the All Stars getting people on stage with the cardboard instruments for In the Mood.

This thread has inspired me to have a listen when I get home.

The early stuff is definitely where it's at, Hurry on Sundown being a favourite, Masters of the Universe is a top album.

Closest my Dad has come to talking about his hippy past was when I lent him my copy of the Hawkwind biog as it mentioned the free festival they played in York. I remember him having a right laugh at a bit about Lemmy's speed habit too.

One of the most intense gigs I've been to was Hawkwind at Southampton Gaumont (now the Mayflower). Must have been 81 or 82. Incredible.

Levitation, Levitation, Levitation! :D

Urban Guerrilla, Orgone Accumulator, Silver Machine  , Who's Going To Win the War?, Angels of Death (?????)...

**memories**

:)

In their time they influenced Punk, particularly when Bob Calvert was singing with them, they have written a few good tunes I reckon, Including Death Trap, Orgone Accumulator, Brainstorm and Assault and Battery.
Im sure i remember Dave Brock saying something like 'We are a dirtier version of Pink Floyd'

hawkwind are great!

and they were the only band to regularly play the small venues i could get to as a teenager

I remember him saying that he wished Hawkwind was four replicas of him, too much ego but some great tunes and live showz

They were one of the first bands I ever saw (either them or Motorhead, The Damned, Saxon or Diamond Head - gives my age away LOL), at the time that the Choose Your Masques album had come out. They were surprisingly good.

I'm reliably informed by my hippy parents that I was at a lot of earlier concerts and free festivals, but one of my first gig memories is of Hawkwind in 1974. I was only 5 at the time, and it was raining quite heavily on the night. I do remember the music, the lightshow, and Stacia.

Although I've never been a particularly big Hawkwind fan over the years, I do think my early exposure to them probably explains why my brain's hot-wired to like modern day stoner rock. :D

It was a/the gig where someone :D shouted "wipe your arse on it" and Brock(?) wiped his arse with the Stars n Stripes.

Can't remember who played support that night.

I used to have Quark, Strangeness and Charm on vinyl and I currently have Hall of the Mountain Grill on the hard drive.

Not crap.
