i can sympathise. i'm a west ham fan and i've hardly ever seen them play, because i can't afford it. my other vices are cheaper and more local. i know that watching them on the telly isn't the same but there you go. if you reckon i'm not a proper fan cos of that then so be it. i go and see leyton orient play now and again. it's not the same though!

yup...me and the ol man used go week in week out between 7 and 10 though when we moved away less and less...got back into going up when I was allowed to travel at about 16 then all over Europe at about 18....since uni though very rarely.....and more often than not to away games ....do have tickets to Bolton mind on Paddies day which am looking forward to.

Moving away was the biggest factor though priorities change, playing has always been more important plus girlfriends aren't particularly keen and can't watch any game for less than a tonne these days travel and all considered. :(

Been watching Brighton for 31 years, sometimes with season ticket, sometimes just a couple of games per season.

I've had the same seat at Stamford Bridge for 10 years.....atmosphere is dead these days tbh.

Revol68....If you've only been to see your team once and haven't lived in the area, why do you hate Liverpool so much? If you hate Man City, I might have to laugh.

It seems to me that the fans who don't ever go to games try to make up for this fact by really hating the team of their choice's rivals.

Like Liverpool fans in London, they don't really have a reason to hate Everton that much do they?

You do realise we have tonnes of smug liverpool fans here, my big brother was one and I think that played a major role in me supporting Man Utd, especially as they weren't very good at the time. My dad's an Everton fan and i probably picked up abit of his loathing for them. I don't see how location has got anything to do with it really, I mean it's not like I hate Everton fans (actually I was at Goodison with my dad as a wee fella). The hatred stems from them being rivals and lets be honest Liverpool and Man Utd are the two clubs with the richest history in the Premiership. Anyway I see the whole intra fan hatred and all the banter as just pantomine, makes the games more interesting, doesn't it.

He's what we call a gegger.One game :D

I used to go and see Charlton with my mate who introduced me to English football quite a bit but he then married an Aussie and fucked off over there to live.

I don't think I've seen them live since. He was a member of the supporters club and used to get the tickets. I remember I did try and get a ticket for a game once but it was such a hassle, quite a bit of cash and I would have been going on my own which all put me off.

I do, now and again, go and see Leyton Orient play instead.

You do know where Belfast is?

What you doing supporting Man U if you live in Belfast? Doesn't Ireland have a football team? Or are you too embarressed to support them as they are that rubbish?

I support my local team. They were only Division 3 when I started supporting them. No couch surfing glory supporter me!

Isnt it up to revol68 who he supports and if he can be arsed to go and watch them?
People from all over the world support Man U etc....Its up to them.

Yup.

Season ticket at Old Trafford back in the 70s. travelled from North Wales for every game. Then me mam gave up the tickets cos of the violence. Never been able to get one since.

Season ticket at Pumas here, but don`t go anymore goes they're shit and I`ve better things to do on a Sunday morning.

Never needed a season ticket at Ninian Park - though I went to most every game for about 2 seasons.

Stop licking lead. Of course Ireland has a football team, but it's not much craic cheering on a national side, kinda leaves you with a lot of spare time on your hands.

And yes when I lived in Larne I followed them, well until I got fed up with the heavy mixture of shite football and sectarianism (though on the sectarian front things have improved alot in recent years).

The teams we have in Northern Ireland are way below the level of your Division 3, I went to a Crusaders game the other week that made the AFC Wimbledon look like European Cup contenders.

There is also the small matter that everyone in Northern Ireland supports a team in England and Scotland. It's a mixture of wanting to cheer on decent football, historical connections with cities or clubs through players or immigration (which is why Manchester, Liverpool and Arsenal have massive irish fan bases) and the not insignificant fact that local teams serve partially as sectarian signifiers and so it eases cross community interaction if you can talk about an English team.

Anymore parochial pricks want to say anything?

Sure but don't expect me to take seriously someone from India chanting Man U till i die!

You know what's well depressing! Before the troubles Linfield (spit!) and Belfast Celtic had crowds of 60,000.

The other week at Seaview you'd be lucky if there was 500.

Good answers fair play.

But there are still plenty of Man U supporters out there who have little reason other than they were winning a lot when they decided to pick a team. Although Chelsea seem to be attracting a lot of them now.

Yeah there are plenty of them, the infuriating thing is that alot of them have been to Old Trafford on their package deals, complete with their Megastore vouchers.

Like I said a mate of mine supported Blackburn up until 1999 then switched to Man Utd and he likes to brag that he's seen them play more times than me! And another rugger bugger prick I knew from school and who I had supported Leeds came out as a Man Utd fan sometime after!

Like I said the worst thing about being a Man Utd fan is other Man Utd fans.

You're a glory seeker - end of. :p

It's bad enough that you support a team who have absolutely nothing to do with you but you then go and choose the McDonalds of football. Why not support Nottingham Forest or Birmingham - plenty of Irish people in those cities. Or if Irishness has nothing to do with your choice how about Barnsley or Scunthorpe?

Yeh you're a gegger.Support who the fuck you want-who cares. Why take on all the animosities between L.F.C. and the mancunts what have they got to do with you?The hatred stinks so haven't you got things to sort out nearer home without wanting more.

You'd at least stand a chance of getting a ticket when you finally make your second game.

Well I was about 7 or 8 when I started supporting Man Utd, at the time my big brother and most of his mates were all Liverpool supporters and my dad was an Everton supporter, me being a contrary little shit from no age happened to see Man Utd on TV and liked their red and black kit. That was in 1988 and we weren't exactly showing any hints of becoming the most sucessful team in the nineties.

And as for supporting Barnsley or Scunthorpe, well not being from their and being a football fan I would have no reason to support such a team.

oh catcha grip it's hardly a real hatred, certainly not comparable to the troubles here.

Can't you read? I did support my local team and went to their matches home and away until I reached an age where sectarianism becomes alot more relevant. I'm now living in Belfast and I'm not switching between Irish league teams and begin supporting a Belfast side.

And why wouldn't I support Man Utd they were on tv when i was growing up, they played exciting football and had quite a few Irish players. I wasn't gonna support Liverpool or Everton cos my brother and da did and Arsenal were fucking awful.

And sure don't you worry about my tickets, sure if i keep at this IT shite I might end up as comfortable as your goodself, then I can go see them alot more.

I dont want tell you who to support revol but why would you have to pick a Belfast team rather than Larne? Its hardly a million miles away and Larne must play quite a few games in and around Belfast.

You're meant to get all dewy eyed about being taken by your dad to watch your local side getting stuffed at home 0-4 in the rain when your were 5. Not extolling the virtues of Sky fucking television. You are a bloody disgrace Revol. :D

hmm because that would be swapping loyalties within the same league! It would be like someone growing up in Newcastle, supporting Newcastle away and home, moving down to London and supporting Chelski.

We never got Sky till 1995!

I had to make do with Match of the Day, Shoot magazine and ITV.

Once upon a time I realised that to avoid missing out on a lot of pub talk with my mates I needed to support a premiership side. As a welshman I didn't want to support an english football team. So I picked the Chelsea :P :D
They weren't an english team, well they didn't have any english players. They had Dennis Wise but he only counts as half.

I bought a shirt. I even went to Stamford Bridge.
Didn't last. I just couldn't commit emotionally to a team that i had picked n chosen. I don't think you pick team. The team picks you, sometimes to your lasting regret.
