I've simply never seen it. Not avoided it - just that I've never known it to be on telly when I'm watching. Never been on at a re-run cinema, etc. So I've never had the choice of seeing it even if I wanted to.

Because TV and cinema are the only mediums for film, of course.

Superb! One of the best lines for me is when Bogart gets shown his file, flicks thru it and queries:
Are my eyes really blue?
Tickles me every time, and I've watched this WAY more times than once... :)

Although it is one of my favourite films I've never seen it start to finish. some how I've only seen the end, the beginning or the middle. Every time I sit down to watch it something happens that means I don't see the whole film in one go! One day I might, with luck.

dead in the soul then
I thought that was what Army Of Shadows was about actually. The resistance members are all essentially dead, almost totally alienated from everyday existence and operating within their own moral sphere with utter ruthlessness. They spend most of their time waiting, hiding and occasionally murdering informers as quietly as possible, NOT showboating in a cafe full of bent coppers, nazis and liquored up louche opportunistic types. As wartime propaganda Casablanca is ok, but it sustains a certain bourgeois conceit about the reality of occupation and anti-fascism. Allo Allo on the other hand...
