Have you got a bonus this year?

If we're allowed to moan about being self-employed, one of the companies I work has paid me the same hourly rate for the past 7 years -- not a penny increase.

And this is the sort of hourly rate that most people who work in-house would easily get plus the usual the benefits of holiday pay and sick pay that freelancers don't enjoy. Depressing.

It's up to you to hold up the bowl and demand more gruel, though. Just one of the awkward tasks you have to deal with as a freelancer.

Unfortunately so. And it's so terribly un-English to say "actually you should pay me more now".

I heard that some of my co-workers had been asking for raises for me the other day, possibly because when I get pissed off I bitch that if I wanted to do boring shit all day I could be earning four times as much doing boring shit for someone else etc etc.

True, of course, although this company's attitude is that they have a load of people on their freelance waiting list who are willing to do the work at that price. Which is sadly true.

So in this particular case it's more a question of getting off my fat arse and finding other companies, and/or income streams that pay better.

You don't get bonuses of any type in my job...I quite often get bottles of wine as a thank you from teachers whose classes I assist in.

Bonuses are almost always quite seriously proscribed though. They are effectively just extra salary that arrives all at once; if they don't appear, people would bitch or quite, they're pretty constant.

Have recently changed jobs, but at the last place last Christmas we didn't get anything (we usually did).
A few months later (after I'd handed my notice in because they were overdue our annual salary review by 6 months), they told us that there was no bonus and the salary reviews had been delayed due to the 'economic climate', and they didn't want to risk having to lay people of.

Which was complete bollocks, seeing as it's a wholly private held company with lots of money in the bank and mainly government clients (who were actually increasing spending during the recession).

I wonder how many other people have been fobbed off this year!

£400 after tax. And we only got that cos they didnt give us one last year. I also havent had a payrise in 3 years

But I dont actually do much work, start and finish when I want and work from home nearly all the time so it aint so bad.

Well we got one in March (8% of salary) and were told there'd be no pay rise, but now they've announced they're paying 75% of next year's bonus early, in December, and the rest in March as usual. What are they up to? :hmm:

Possibly the start of the accounting year is between December and March at some point, and they want to fiddle the numbers for some purpose.
