Have you ever put diesel in a petrol or petrol in a diesel car?

see that's senisble sadly it's not the case in the uk they are all one size...

thou i tink it should be an instant ban from driving for doing this it's tantimount ot driving with out due care and attention clearly if you are too stupid to know what fuel to stick in to your car becuase you haven't bothered to check you aren't going to be looking out for other important things like other road users or pedestrains...

I am sure the unleaded one is smaller than the leaded one...

apparently you need to buy a range rover to prevent this sort of accident

Which is why Land Rover has come up with something they call the petrol fuel guard system, which comes with the Range Rover TDV8. The petrol fuel guard system activates when a petrol nozzle is inserted into the fuel tank - it differenciates a petrol nozzle and a diesel nozzle by how deep the nozzle goes into the fuel tank - a petrol nozzle is thinner but longer, while a diesel’s is shotter but fatter. If a petrol nozzle is detected, a mechanical shutter is automatically activated, preventing petrol from getting into the fuel tank.

pity range rovers don't come with a spell checker too

Unleaded pumps should be green and diesel should be black, right?

Not at bloody Moto Motorway Services, their corporate colour is green, so all the pumps are green, a point I failed to notice at the time.

So, I fill-up the tank from almost empty & go in to pay.

Cashier says, ‘diesel?’

I say, ‘er, no.’

She says, ‘oh, yes.’

I say, ‘oh fuck’. :o

RAC arranged & paid for recovery to a local garage, cost me about £100 to drain the tank, dispose of waste diesel AND get filled up with petrol – sounds like a bargain compared to some stories on this thread.

Used to happen often at the garage I once worked at. Mostly they/we caught it before they put much in but I do remember a drive-off who filled-up with desiel & got as far as a nearby set of traffic lights & a petrolhead guy who dumped his gf on the forecourt when she filled his pride & joy with desiel whilst he was dithering in the shop. To make it worse, two of us (one on the forecourt & me on the till/pump release) had asked her if the car really did take desiel & she had given a clear yes!

Squaddies from the local barracks were worst tho. they put desiel in everthing - Including several of the fast vehicles used as escorts by the royal protection squad. Oops!

my story wasn't made up...the bloke I heard about had a big flashy car...it cost 2 and a half G, as loads of expensive parts needed replacing...add on labour.........
joke eh.

No they're not.

They used to be.

Forecourts/car makers here have only changed to different sized nozzles in the last few years. Even then, it is still quite possible to fit some of the nozzles in the wrong filler necks.

Some of them could be quite clever - Another lad spent ages contorting himself trying to get fuel into the 2-stroke oil tank on his new bike. He was not at that point used to dummy tanks etc.

He looked rather blank when I suggested he looked under the seat but was pleased to find the filler under it. :)

Similar thing happened to my girlfriends car last week (although it was 2 stroke rather than diesel). Cost about the same, £70 to drain the tank, a fill up and a tip for the mechanic for working after he was meant to be closed.

Plus the engine seems to be running a bit smoother now too :D

I once filled a van up with diesel, drove about 3 miles and then wondered why I came to a shuddering halt.

I mean, who the fuck has a petrol van nowadays? :D

they bloody are at all the placs i fill up in hackney harringay, tottenham and wood green.... :p

On the Focuses at work, the Diesels and Petrol ones have different sized errr... fuel holes.... :D

I usually fill 'em at Sainsburys or Tescos, both of which have different sized Unleaded and Diesel nozzles.

It's only something I've noticed fairly recently, though...

I only ever put Optimax/V-Power in the tank of my Scirocco, so have never had a problem on this front :)
