Yet again it's a question of having the right hardware. There's info around on insanleymac if you're interested for starters. Just to turn it around I have XP running in Vmware on my Hackintosh.

Anyway, got it so that I can boot the Gentoo LiveCD and mount the HFSplus file system. You need to format the disk HFS+ without Journaling because Linux can't edit it with that switched on.
The the mach_kernel that it installs isn't the netkas 9.2.0 one that should work, but the cycle booting Linux and testing out the changes is too long, so going to reformat this time with a spare 5gb Partition for Gentoo so I can just boot to that rather than off the CD which takes ages.
