When were you growing up? I know the pledge of allegiance used to be a lot more common when I was a kid. (About 20 years ago) (Although you could always refuse)

I was surprised that they didn't have it at the local schools, especially where I live (very conservative, christian area). Apparently it's not at all as common as it used to be.

We're talking 60's to mid 70's: every morning would begin with the Pledge (isn't that what AA members take? ;) ) and a national hymn. No one actually said we could refuse and I did it of my own volition...from the age of 5! Maybe things have moved on, though I doubt DoD schools have abandoned it.
