Has George W Bush been the worst President in history?

Careful with the editing. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're the typical American who wouldn't know actual American history versus what's taught in books if it fell from the sky onto your lap. )

You mean as opposed to your 'special' history, wherein everything in the pre civil war south was all sweetness and light?:p

Wrong again and again Mr Canuck of the far north. The president of the United States is the president of all the states, not just the north ones or the south ones. If I hit the lottery I'm going to send you on a one month vacation anywhere you want. You need to get away. ;)

You've forgotten our old discussions so soon?:)

I haven't. Those crimes cannot be forgotten so easily. DM was being a bit of a tit (which seems unlike him) about slavery if i recall.

If that is the best you can do
why bother talking to you?

Oh please don't stop. I love shallow people - you know, the ones who think they can read into other people's posts and tell what political party they belong to and then be dense enough to become rather insistent about it.

US Army unit deployed to home front
Nonlethal force for civil unrest

A US army brigade combat unit will be deployed at home for the first time, the Army Times reports.

The 1st BCT (Brigade Combat Team), numbering about 650 personnel, has returned from Iraq. But rather than dealing with enemy combatants, it may be called to deal with unruly Americans.

There's a thread here.

Yeah that is right; you really cannot compare him with someone like Andrew Jackson.

As much as I dislike the man, and his political party, I think it is premature to describe him as the worst. Regan, Nixon and Johnson all set a high bar.
Gee.....lemme guess.....Johnson was responsible for Vietnam....right?

"Ho Chi Minh asked the Americans to honor their commitment to independence, citing the Atlantic Charter and the U.N. Charter on self-determination. However, by the end of the war, the U.S. government had begun to redirect its foreign policy from the wartime goal of the liberation of all occupied countries and colonies to the postwar anti-communist crusade, which became the Cold War. In France, where communists had led the resistance to the Nazi occupation, American policy supported General Charles de Gaulle and his anti-communist "Free French." De Gaulle aimed to restore the glory of France, which meant the return of all former French colonies. U.S. relations with the Vietnamese turned sour. President Truman refused to answer letters or cables from Ho. Instead, the U.S. began to ship military aid to the French forces in Indochina."

I've gotta agree, with you, on ReRon Reagan, though.......

"Despite his aw shucks style, Reagan found virtually every anticommunist action justified, no matter how brutal. From his eight years in the White House, there is no historical indication that he was troubled by the bloodbath and even genocide that occurred in Central America during his presidency, while he was shipping hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to the implicated forces."

I included him because he escalated the Vietnam war.

That and I figured I better include a democrat, or some chuckle head would post bad things about me over the internet.;)

I guess you just can't win sometimes.

As historian Robert Dallek writes, "Lyndon Johnson's escalation of the war in Vietnam divided Americans into warring camps … cost 30,000 American lives by the time he left office, (and) destroyed Johnson's presidency

We shall have to see how bad global warming gets over the next thirty years. If it gets as bad as some suspect then GWB may come out top of the shit list with ease.

That and not cutting back on oil consumption when his former adviser, Matt Simmons has done so much to spread the word that middle eastern oil is about half of its official total. To truly understand how bad Dubya is we will have to judge in hindsight.

Johnson was the one who put the money where Kennedy's mouth was, with respect to civil rights.

But them's just the results from Usnews site visitors clicking names they've heard of - in a country that collectively believes history started 200 years ago :(

Worst 3 from actual (US) historians - doubtless "élite":

Informed US opinion said:
1. James Buchanan (1857-1861)
He refused to challenge either the spread of slavery or the growing bloc of states that became the Confederacy.

2. Warren G. Harding (1921-1923)
He was an ineffectual and indecisive leader who played poker while his friends plundered the U.S. treasury.

3. Andrew Johnson (1865-1869)
He survived impeachment after opposing Reconstruction initiatives including the 14th amendment.

But for dumb, rather than malevolent, I'd have to follow Dorothy Parker's judgement and pick Calvin "how can they tell" Coolidge...

Shocked to see that 4% of the vote say FDR (the greatest stateman of the 20 century IMO) this the worst president, opposed to 2% who vote Gerald Ford (so dumb that they say he could not walk and chew gum at the same time) as the worst president ever. For the record I would say that Dubya is the worst in my lifetime and that includes Nixon, Ford, Carter and Regan.

You've got to understand your list of criteria isn't going to necessarily include domestic issues the way it is for a US citizen. People here are chiefly concerned with foreign policy. Anyhow that list is for stooges.

Shocked to see that 4% of the vote say FDR (the greatest stateman of the 20 century IMO) this the worst president,

I'm guessing that'll be the Freepers & the Chicago School ideologues, accusing FDR of "ssssocializm"...

...and maybe the Repugnican Congresscritters we heard from yesterday, accusing Bush of "ssssocializm"...

That's the bowdlerised version, the real one was 'fart and chew gum'

Having followed the US political scene very closely since 911, I have no doubt whatsoever that George W Bush is the worst President the history of the US
He has missed the boat on so many occasions, many of which were extremely important. Time after time he has proven that he is not a leader.

Important examples of leadership capabilities -
911,
while reading to the children and when told of the planes hitting the WTC he literally sat their waiting for someone to come and take control of the situation ... or for someone to come and tell him what to do.

A leader would have excused himself from the room, left, and then started delegating people to find out exactly the the size and scope of the problem and what needed to be done.

Katrina,
it took him 3 day's before even flying over the area to assess the damage. Meanwhile people didn't even have fresh water FFS!
Bush should have found out exactly what needs to be done and then under executive order made it happen.
He could have initiated field hospitals, organised communication and transport (for people foor and water) ....but NO, he sat on his hands while thousands of people suffered.

Sorry for the years old worn out examples but I believe them to be very important milestones of the ineptitude of Bush. They are good (clearcut) examples of how a person in a position of Authority hasn't the ability to do good and is too incompetent to use the power given to him.

When Clinton left office he left the US is a very good financial position, a very healthy surplus.
Bush spent that surplus and more, in the first 2 years of office! One way was by giving the largest companies huge tax breaks...I could go on and on about the most basic mistakes this man ans his administration have made that have snowballed. But I'm sure most here are more than familiar with the mistakes and inaction this idiot has made.

People like bush care little (until they are caught!) about the majority of the population. As long as they get filthy rich then who cares if millions of people don't have health care or decent education?
Any company or business at all that Bush is in charge of will fail, because he simply has not the intelligence to see what needs doing.
The guy's a fucking idiot.

Although (in modern times) Reagan was a very close second, and Nixon was a dishonest man, they were nowhere near as intellectually flawed as Bush.

*(please don't use AMERICA to describe the USA, it is only a small portion of the Americas! Either the US or the USA).

I'm guessing that'll be the Freepers & the Chicago School ideologues, accusing FDR of "ssssocializm"...

Laughable, isn't it? FDR did a great deal to shore up capitalism. He even dragged his feet on the issue of lynching (though to be fair he was caught between a rock and a hard place on that one).

61% of American historians polled for this article - from before the financial crisis - ranked Bush the worst ever.

http://harpers.org/archive/2008/04/hbc-90002804

No individual president can compare to the second Bush. Glib, contemptuous, ignorant, incurious, a dupe of anyone who humors his deluded belief in his heroic self, he has bankrupted the country with his disastrous war and his tax breaks for the rich, trampled on the Bill of Rights, appointed foxes in every henhouse, compounded the terrorist threat, turned a blind eye to torture and corruption and a looming ecological disaster, and squandered the rest of the world’s goodwill. In short, no other president’s faults have had so deleterious an effect on not only the country but the world at large.

I reckon he's the worst postwar president without a doubt, it'll take a few decades to see if he ranks below Pierce, etc.

do you mean Gen. Jackson (earlier of 1812 fame) of Andrew 'cretin' Johnson, as in Abe's veep?
the difference is germane.
