has anyone ever ran onto a football pitch during a game?

Yeah but the game was already over and they were actually breaking in through the gates at the back of the away end.

Standing in the six yard box in a three quarters empty Ashton Gate was a bloody odd experience, especially when trying to look after a 13 year old kid brother.

That was the Beadle 90th minute equaliser game wasn't it? The riot televised live on sky?

I remember watching that. Am I right in thinking that the tunnel had been moved since Rovers' last visit, and all your players ran to the wrong place, trying to escape from the hordes of shitheads?

Almost. The second pitch invasion (the first being immediately after our equaliser) occurred at the final whistle when our players were trying to applaud the travelling army. Most of them got away to the tunnel at the far end but a couple (Lee Martin, Ian Holloway, maybe a couple of others) legged it to the old tunnel area because it was nearer. I think Martin got a slap for his trouble.

Some of the excuses used in court were hilarious. From memory there was 'I'd promised my son he'd see me on telly', 'I wanted to get to the Rising Sun quicker so took a short cut across the pitch' and 'I thought I was going to be crushed so ran onto the pitch to escape'.

There really was a crush when people were trying to escape from their invasion of the away end through the gates at the back behind the goal, which is why we ended up on the pitch.

Memorable day all round really.

Sky? Pah. Much better when it used to be on nationwide telly! Man City v Spurs in the FA Cup in '91 or '92 was a pretty good one.

I don't remember that. Is it on Youtube or anything?

about 1993 or 94 maybe? I remember the one you're on about, they all came on from the Platt Lane end didn't they?

You could see it coming, a few went on after a goal & then the other team immediately scored in reply so then they all went on, few punch ups, then the horses went on. It was a while ago now so it's not too clear. Funny as fuck on live telly though.

Remember that one where some fella went on the pitch & got taken down by a copper who started hitting him with a baton & so some other fella runs on & boots the copper in the head & the next thing you know loads of fans are kicking the shit out of the copper. There was a thread about it on here. A pre-season game on the mainland I think.

...often as part of a cunning plan to 'take' the away end.
In the 80s I led a small baton charge to repel some visiting toerags (Wolves, I think) invading the pitch at Loftus Road to "take" the QPR end ...
