Sometimes it's difficult to tell if an idiosyncratic writing style is down to the author or the translator not being any good. I thought the writing in "Kafka on the Shore" worked and I love the weird stuff. Thanks for the recommendations, I think I'll go for the Wind-up Bird Chronicle next.
