Harriet Miers Supreme Court Nomination

The iroinc thing about it is that she was forced to withdraw by her own party.
Rectal republicans want someone with a 'proven track record.' Meaning they want someone they know will vote against abortion.

Well the ultra-conservative Samuel Alito has been nominated. Unusually enough he actually has judicial experience but there is controversy as the Seattle Times points out.

When Samuel Alito appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee 15 years ago as a nominee for the appellate bench, he promised in writing to disqualify himself from "any cases involving the Vanguard companies," a stock and mutual-fund firm in which he had substantial personal investments

How close is this man to Dubya?

Peeb's favourite organisation the ACLU aren't happy either.

For example, in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Judge Alito voted to uphold a state law that required women to notify their husbands before having an abortion. Justice O'Connor joined with a majority of the court in concluding otherwise. In addition, Judge Alito has been more willing to support state-sponsored religious displays than Justice O'Connor. And he has written several dissenting opinions on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals that, if accepted, would have made it more difficult for discrimination victims to prevail and recover damages

He's got a considerable amount of Exxon stock too, as The Guardian points out.

The Exxon-Mobil stock was Alito's largest single holding in 2004. He also owned shares in 14 Vanguard Group mutual funds, with a combined worth of $455,000 to $1.05 million, and stock in several other U.S. corporations.

The Vanguard holdings were the subject of a conflict of interest complaint filed against Alito in 2003 after a three-judge panel on which he served dismissed an appeal of a lower court ruling favorable to the Vanguard Group.
