Hammond Organ Appreciation Thread

Just been listening to a few tracks by The Zombies and it got me thinking about bands that use the Hammond organ. Brilliant sound, absolutely unmistakeable in the 60s. Thinking about it I reckon well over half the stuff I like features the Hammond in action. Any other Hammond fans out there? What's you're favourite bands? Favourite songs?

The X66 - a radical new design for 1965. Designed to replace the best Hammond ever - the B3

and a Hammond with Lesley Speakers - heaven!

Aye. There's a fine history and reference section on that site I linked to that explains how the organs and Leslie speakers developed. Nice virtual museum section too!

My dad had a hammond, it was his pride and joy, he went on to get a moog and then a synth but nothing compared (so he said)
One of my earliest memories was sitting on the leslie, i was so little I had to drag a chair in so I could climb up onto it. I loved it there, but it wasn't until I was much much older that I realised why I liked it so much.

Good vibrations..

Funnily enough, i just went to the funeral of a fella called Roger Coulam, he was the father of one of me best mates from school.

He was a bit of a master on the old Hammond, and had been a working session musician until he got sick with the old cancer a few years ago. He was in that band Blue Mink, with that hit Melting Pot.

It was always a joy, as kids, him occassionally inviting us into his music room, and letting loose on the organ - good stuff.

During the funeral i learned that it was him who played the Hammond on Je Taime by Serge Gainsborg - one of the most famous Hammond riffs ever, as well of loads of other stuff.

During his funeral they played stuff he'd played on, rather than some boring old hymns, and the main song was the last one in this medley in the link, and the family danced during it.

The family still have his original old B3 Hammond in his old music room - i said they should have buried him with it, to which they remarked they could have buried him in it!!

Have a listen to some of this, off his 1967 album called Organ in Orbit.....

I've always wanted a hammond with a lesley cabinet. Not the cheapest or most portable of instruments though.
I saw a sale on ebay the other day for a hammond, a rhodes and a moog all for about $1000 at the time, I think they were all in a pretty poor state but it would be a great project for anyone who knew what they were doing to fix them all up. Unfortunately I do not, nor do i live in the US...
