The clocks have gone back and we're playing our first return league fixture of the season. We lost 3-2 at Finchley on the opening day of the season, giving them a 2 goal start with a mostly sluggish performance before hitting back to equalise, only to concede the third in stoppage time. Wingate were the surprise package last season, finishing 4th, and 4 straight wins coming into this game has lifted them into 4th place once again.

There's a normal train service to East Dulwich for this one.

Hell of a game. I thought they were excellent and had the measure of us. But then we kept battering away and they cracked just enough. I thought this season was dribbling away. But this match has given me hope. Which means Hendon will do us 3-0 on Tuesday of course.

A high quality game and a cracking contest, illuminated by a pair of stunning 30 yard goals plus a dramatic winner in the final minute of stoppage time. I actually felt for the visitors, who didn't really deserve to lose like that after a brilliant first half performance full of pace, with slick passing and movement, that often left us chasing shadows. Ultimately they paid the price for not converting more of their chances while on top. Their only goal was an awesome strike from our regular nemesis Ogo Obi, who now has 6 goals from 4 matches against us for 3 different clubs, but this was the first time he hasn't contributed towards a win. He shaped inside from the right and whipped an unstoppable left foot shot beyond the keeper's reach into the far top corner.

The second half was a different story, with the half-time replacement of Wynter with Porter giving a more attacking edge. Hamlet were soon in the ascendancy, and JBW equalised 10 minutes in with a trademark long range torpedo that flew through a crowded box and inside the left hand post, with former Hamlet keeper Charlie Grainger wrongfooted and possibly unsighted. We generally looked the likelier winners after that, enjoying more of the play and territory, although Wingate remained a threat on the break with some menacing counter attacks. In the final minute of stoppage time a corner was only partially cleared and the loose ball was crossed back in from the opposite side. Danny Mills met it with one of his helicopter leaps, hanging in the air above all else, to send a looping header into the net.

I liked the look of new midfielder Hassan Ibrahiym, who looked pretty sharp and displayed an impressive passing range before he was substituted midway through the second half.

A very rare lapse from you PP.

Pretty sure Wynter was replaced at half time by Kresh. And the new chap was replaced half way through the second half by George.

Other than that, your usual high standard 😊

Last week we scored an underserved equaliser from a corner deep into stoppage time. This week, I think it was a deserved winner.

Whilst we might not have created many big chances of forced Grainger into making outstanding saves, we dominated possession and territory, and it was the final ball or decision that was lacking.

I thought Marshall had the most influential game I’ve seen him have in a Hamlet shirt and the debutant looked good. One particular take on the half-turn, took two or three Wingate players out the game.

The highlighting of Marshall and Ibrahiym lead me onto a wider point. I think the biggest difference between last season and this is that the droppff between whatever you perceive to be Hak’s best XI and those players who are 12-19th ish in the depth chart is far smaller. We’ve a squad capable of challenging for the playoffs rather than a starting XI capable of challenging.

We’re still maybe one centre back short, as I think playing Wynter there weakens the midfield, but maybe that’s Ross Marshall once he’s fit again.

I thought that was a great game of football. Exactly what makes live football so much better than TV football. Perfect football afternoon. 2 teams going for it as darkness descends, big crowd and any result possible until the end. Great credit to Wingate who attacked all afternoon with speed and skill but our spirit and no little skill after the break was excellent. I must admit i was happy to take the draw as their breaks near the end were becoming more dangerous but there was great recoveries on our part and a blinding save. Credit to the manager and team in taking risks and going for it. That was some reaction from all when the winner went in. ....A perfect day .

I'm disappointed you didn't mention the Lillington-esque celebration, brings back good memories 😁

Also worth noting how many late goals we have scored this. In most games we score after the 80th min and a few after 90th which suggests good fitness and attitude .
