Hamas: we'll kill Jewish childeren.

Do you have proof?
It's really not liked at college/uni to have reservist strutting around in uniform and carrying weapon:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/930827.html (2007)

Also, the majority of students don't seem amoral to me.

At Hebrew Unviversity some 100 Jewish students chanted support for the IDF operations with slogans such as "May your village burn", "See you in reserves" and "Take their identification cards away"

This in opposition to the larger coalition of over 200 Jewish and Arab Israeli students protesting against Gaza attacks with "Gaza, Gaza, don't despair, we will put an end to the occupation".

Dressed in a dark suit and as he read the statement, he declared “Victory is coming, God willing.”

Another Hamas man of god speaks. But after all, they were elected so it's OK.

I don't doubt that Hamas have vowed to avenge these attacks, but I think it must have taken a fairly hysterical writer to get this:

a top Hamas leader broke cover to warn Israel that the Islamists would kill Jewish children anywhere in the world in revenge for their own young who have died in the devastating assault.

From this, even before you consider what's been lost in translation from Arabic, which is IMO, a very hyberbolic language:

“They have legitimised the murder of their own children by killing the children of Palestine,” said Mahmoud Zahar, in a televised broadcast recorded at a secret location. “They have legitimised the killing of their people all over the world by killing our people.”

Yeah, but you know, that's what the terriosts do. (thank you for pointing that out btw, i was well lazy in not following that up)

I'm not about to condemn Hamas for using these tactics since that's what asymmetrical warfare is about - attempting to level the battleground by using unconventional tactics that push the moral buttons of 3rds parties to pressurise one or more aggressors to force some kind of resolution that you wouldn't be able to achieve purely militarily methods...

In other words, using the bodies of your own people as pawns in the propaganda game.

Putting your own citizens deliberately in harm's way, so that you can get a good soundbite on CNN the following evening.

They don't have a "human shield strategy". It's what attackers always say when they blow up a school or hospital - "oh, sorry, but it's their fault, it may have looked like a kitten orphanage but they were hiding dirty bombs there." The US said it when attacking Baghdad for instance.

I think they attacked Baghdad because Saddam's administration was headquarted there; but I could be wrong.

As for the Hamas statement, as butchers said it's just a powerless eye-for-an-eye rant.

No, it's a manifesto. It's what they will do, should they get more power.

Das Kapital was just a book under the arm of some gray haired guy at the British Library at first. Mein Kampf was a book under the bunk in some guy's cell, at first.

Powerless rants and declarations, at first.

I'll bet not. Back then, they exhibited a bit of honour and morality in how they conducted war.

No they didn't. The whole mythology of the noble warrior is precisely that - mythology. Throughout history armies have committed atrocities designed to demoralise and degrade the sprits of their foes, by prooving that they are both militarily stronger, and are also prepared to go further in order to win.

Remember Brando's monologue to Willard in Apocalypse Now, about the strength of the Vietcong hacking off the limbs of the innoculated kids? That behaviour wasn't invented in the C20th, it has been a factor in warfare since we started clubbing each other. Mass rape, massacring of civilian populations, throwing the heads of your enemies people back to them - the only differene about the modern era is that we see it all minute by minute and in living colour.

During the attack on Baghdad they explained away any reports of hitting civilian targets with "oh sorry but there was an anti-aircraft battery there, it's Saddam's fault for deliberately placing them next to kitten orphanages".

Which doesn't really sound very believable when you actually have a stated policy of inflicting general damage for psychological effect, but hey, terrists.

My understanding is that the human shield strategy is deliberate.

If you can find a neutral source to the contrary, well and good. Actually, if you can find a neutral source at all, I will paypal you a falafel.

Gaza City is one of the most densely populated places on earth. The whole Gaza Strip including the agricultural bits such as they are and the deserty bits has a population density about the same as Central London.

Of course, there's no chance that the man who gassed Kurdish villages full of civilians, might actually put batteries next to civilian buildings like hospitals etc.

The fact is that the people concerned pretend that they can - and want to - do "surgical strikes", when they can't and don't want to anyway. Destroying civilian infrastructure and killing people has a psychological effect. You may remember something called "shock and awe".

Sure, but Israel appears to still be following the strategy laid out in Mussolini's mate Jabotinsky's 'Iron Wall', while Hamas have been keen to discuss as settlement based on the right of return and the 1967 borders for years now.

Of course, that's pretty inconvenient for Israel if it is still following Jabotinsky's strategy isn't it?

Chechens 'using human shields'
Russian forces have accused Chechen fighters of using civilians as a "human shield" by preventing them leaving the capital, Grozny, as it comes under continued bombardment.

Chechen fighters in other parts of the breakaway republic have been putting up fierce resistance to what they described as a massed attack by the Russians on all fronts.

Both sides reported heavy fighting around the town of Argun, 8 km (five miles) east of Grozny, which Russian Defence Minister Igor Sergeyev said would be captured in two or three days.

There's no serious evidence that it ever happened, and there's no serious evidence that it happens here either.
