Halloween round my way

Here hang on, Halowe'en is not a yankee thing, the bonfire tradition comes from a pagan festival where they would purify the farm animals by driving them through a fire.
Well I never heard of Hallowe'en all the way through my childhood and early teens (in Surrey), and all that Trick or Treat bollocks is certainly a recent (within last 15 years) U.S. import.. along with Friends and decaff skinny bloody lar-tay. Same goes for Father Xmas in red with a white beard.. all made up for a Coca Cola ad.

Does it really fucking matter where trick or treat came from?

Oh, I forgot, nothing good ever came out of America, right?

I remember when my family made the mistake of returning to Ireland from the paradise that is Canada.

Me and my sister went trick or treating on our estate, and discovered that no one (this is 1979) had ever heard of it - including the guy who threatened us with a knife.

that's strange. I certainly went from door to door as a kid in Dublin in the early eighties, all dressed up, looking for sweets. (I got into trouble with mother by going around the pubs in my small Irish village' trick or treating' around the same time (but made a lot more money :) ))

Fair point i suppose. After all, they did give us blues and jazz, Tex-Mex food, Jim Beam and Levis. But it seems a shame that our own traditions are being eclipsed.. like bonfire night, and playing conkers. At least cricket made a comeback this summer, and all that awful American football that was all over C4 a few years ago has died the death thankfully.
