Hallelujah Vs The X Factor

how come buckley is doing the cale version rather than just covering a cohen song, is it just because john cale added some extra lyrics? because the chords and stuff are the same, it's not like john cale totally changed the song

Nah, too much wanky violin and cello on it. Buckley wins by stripping it all back. Buckley also had a much better voice than Cale.

He was the first to make it really earnest and pretentious.

Cale didn't add lyrics as such, Cohen wrote a lot more verses than he used and people seem to cherrypick which ones to perform.

i think it's more that Buckley's version would sound radical if it was a version of Cohen's, but it's not. It's clearly a Buckley version of the Cale version of the Cohen version.

And it sucks - overwrought and irritating. The song needs a lighter, wearier touch than Buckley gives it

Cale has literally got a cello on a pop song. He talks the "you never show it to me do ya?" bit through gritted teeth! That not a little overwrought for you? He sounds like a second rate Bowie or Gary Numan impersonator at times...

Exactly. The version everyone copies is the John Cale cover, not the Cohen original. The Cohen version is much longer. Everyone sings the verses Cale picked. The arrangement everyone uses is the Cale arrangement. And so on.

That's a live YouTube clip, not the Cale studio recording.

Listening to the proper one now. It's much better than that live recording but I still much prefer Buckley's voice. Quite honestly, I think anyone who criticises the Buckley version could be accused of being guilty of being a bit contrary. It's annoying now because it's fucking everywhere but for years that was a special song for me, years before I ever knew the history of the song. Growing up, I've met loads of people who feel the same way about it. It's ever so slightly churlish to sit there and slag something which resonates with so many people, I think.

You think the fact that I find Buckley's voice appalling, and always have done, is the result of my apparent contrariness?

have I got that right?

useful response. How about answering the question? :D

Well, you are quite a contrary fellow, Jeffles, you'll be the first to admit that, I'm sure. Of course, I can't say for definite what motivates your feelings towards the song but, if I had to guess, I would plump for your cold, black, evil heart that wants to see only misery on the faces of legions of young folk.

Right, I was just checking that you ARE that arrogant that you'll happily pontificate about people's motivations. And guess what - you are.

I just don't like Buckley, or his Dad. Never have done.

I've known the song since Cohen brought out Various Positions. When I heard the Cale version, on the 1991 tribute album, I'm Your Fan, it was a moment of clarity. That was when I realised how great the song is.

When I first heard the Buckley version, I nearly cried. In my view it ruined it in exactly the same way that Whitney ruined Dolly's I Will Always Love You.

That's fair enough, you obviously had a personal history with the tune so I can see how it would be very galling to have young upstarts like me cream themselves about a later and much more famous version of it.

You're just being contrary. Ken said so, so it must be true.

Ooooooooh, that woulda been a good one as well! Natch!

I've been elected on a popular mandate to wind you up, Jefe. Your issue is with the people, not the man they put in charge of the entire internet.

I am simon quinlag. look upon my wonders and despair:cool:

why? should people just bite their tongue and not give their opinion on something just because it's popular? that's ever so slightly on the path way to claiming that something must be good because so many people like it. slightly.

:D

Apparently. It's funny, because on the Cash/NIN 'Hurt' thread I'm just a sheeple agreeing with what's "cool" for Urbs.

In truth, I'm a grown man with my own taste, and the arrogance to talk about it.

Perhaps it's only people who are sheeple who can't understand how you could differ from public opinion? :)

just saying, like :)
