Hallelujah Vs The X Factor

She tends to oversing sometimes, which can be very annoying. I blame her for Rhydian losing last year, her duet with him was horrendous. It's a shame because she can sing some things beautifully.

she has got a good set of lungs though.

It's very hard to do that song wrong I think. I liked Wainright's version, I have no problems with that Diane Vickers version, I'm even completely apathetic towards el divo but katherine jenkins is bloody awful. i clicked another link on the youtube and her version of nessun dorma was perfectly passable, which surprised me because i would have imagined she'd not be up to the task. but hallelujah, nope.

my mum got the cd with it - got her to stick it on once just to see how wrong it was
eta it's a compilation of Radio 2 friendly artists doing vaguely religious/'insperational' songs, obviously the compilers hadn't ever heard it before either.

Whoever wins is gonna murder it.
I can't really see any of the ones left having a hope. As El Jefe pointed out none of them will "get it" and the song really needs someone who understands the feel of it and can put some experience into it.
MY GOD, what if Eoghan wins..........

I disagree, though I don;t think JB's was great. I think he did it in a way which concentrated on trying to form a musical accompanyment to the lyrics and that made it work for me.

Which is your favourite version, Cale?

well it clearly does matter to some people. Me included.

But.... why?

It's a song. That's already been sung by fuckloads of people. In the grand scheme of things it means fuck all. Why be bothered about who covers it now

Once a song has been released it's fair game, if you don't like a particular version then don't listen to it, surely? Getting worked up/annoyed/angry/whatever by someone singing it seems a tad odd to me...

They should have banned the covering of this song after Cale's version.

But seriously, if you're gonna do it at least do some weird avant garde number, or a drum n bass thing, stop churning out the Cale version ffs it can't be done any better.

LOL! I can't believe those 16 year old bastards have never heard of Leonard Cohen!!! Damn, am I ever glad I'm so much better than them!

I dunno, I reckon Eoghan Quigg could do a version that would be better than all previous one's put together. :hmm:

when I was 16 we watched a certain ultraviolent oliver stone movie and fell in love with cohen right there and then.

when I heard the Buckley version of hallelujah many years later I wanted to gouge out my own eardrums

Yeah, but that's, y'know, you and you're a bit...y'know

Anyway, I've always preferred the Buckley version to the Cohen version, simply because the only Cohen version I've heard of it has terrible keyboards and backing singers and is from his lounge lizard era. The Buckley one gives it some feeling, even if it is ever so earnest and has now been co-opted by everyone on earth. It's his Smells like Teen Spirit, basically.

BUCKLEY WAS DOING THE CALE VERSION. BADLY.

Fuck sake.
