Half life 2, still worth getting?

o perferred doom3 to hl2 but thats the only one thats come close for a long time.

Average may not be the best choice of words but yes I was distinctly underwhelmed by the experience of playing it. To many people's glowing reviews of the game seemed to revolve around comments like "It's got a grav gun!!!111", so fucking what? Most uninspiring weapon ever!
Unlike CoD4 or Halo 1 (too name but two games off the cuff) the game bored me for the most part, the story was banal and the puzzles were piss easy (I think only a couple needed more than one attempt), the long stretch of driving the hover craft with occasional engagement was fairly pointless imo. The atmosphere of the game, such as it was, wasn't really evocative. That said I did like that bit in the square fighting the tripods, great fun!

Agree with KidE, got bored just after you jump in a speed-boat for the first time and havn't revisited.
I gets so much better after that point.
The battles in the streets when you meet up with the resistance, the stalkers, and the citadel levels are some of my favourite moments in video games.

The graphics are fine, and if you've only got a lukewarm graphics card then you're not really in the place to be demanding great graphics!
Install Steam, download the Orange Box for about £15 and get going - no need to even leave your seat.

The only reason to get HL2 on PC is to play CounterStrike Source, on the Xbox360 it's to play the excellent TF2...

I recently got The Orange Box for the 360 and can't get on with HL-2. I'm shit at fps it appears. 3ps, no problem. fps = bollocks. Real fucking shame.

IME getting used to a FPS on a console takes a little bit of time.
I used to be good at Half Life on the PC, years back, but when I first tried Halo, the switch from keyboard+mouse to joypad meant that for the first day or so, Master Chief walked as if he had muscular dystrophy

I was thinking about it, and I think that I just naturally gel with 3ps and especially sandbox style games.
I got Bioshock too, and while it's brilliant, and I find it slightly easier to control than HL2, the fact that it's all go, constantly, with no respite, makes me juddery. I can't play it for more than an hour because I can't handle the stress of being alert constantly.
I find fps more difficult because I can't see why the fuck I'm losing health because I can't see who's shooting my ass from behind (until I turn round, obv), I get confused which way is up vs forward (Portal was a fucker for this what with all the walking through a wall = falling through a ceiling, but it didn't matter too much there because there weren't splicers waiting to mash my face in the other side). I just don't find fps controls intuitive. Like, having to use both sticks to look in the direction you're walking. In a 3ps you naturally turn to face the direction you move (in the ones I've played so far, anyway). I'm sure if I spent loads of time playing fps I'd get used to it, but my 2 experiences with it so far have both come on the heels of having finished playing 3ps's that I really liked, so there was the post-completion anti-climax grumpy comedown feeling coupled with trying a game whose controls I just don't get and that keeps me alert and stressed 100% of the time.

I havnt played in a month or two but the only time I havnt been able to play demo on any server is because the server had a rule of max amount per class maybe thats what was happening?
