Hackney is not the worst place to live!

nope - you've done the inevitable cross-over, there ain't no way back.
Mocha lattes, organic veg and a 4x4 within a year:p

I do the organic veg bit already, but then I did that before coming to London, and I'll still be doing it after the happy day when I can pack my stuff into a van and get out of the damned place!

When's the next mayoral election? I'll vote for the candidate who offers me a repatriation grant to go north again...

Admittedly Church Street is a bit of a white, middle-class enclave, but why shouldn't the white middle-classes have their own expensive vegetable shops and skateboarding outfitters. And there's lots of nice foreign restaurants. Hmmm!

church street can be very annoying tbh, yet i still find myself up there fairly regularly:mad: trying to not look like a member of the tribe...

sure there are plenty of upper middle class prats on church st:rolleyes:
some of these kind of people can annoy me for sure, the only thing you can say
about them is they wont rob/hassle you(except in a busybody middle england way,not in a threatening way i mean)

there are PLENTY of middle class and higher people who arent horrible tho...not all poor people are hereos and not all rich people are villians..life can be complex that way, some people on this thread(or 1 person anyway)needs to realise this:p

Complex i'd agree. But the fact is that while a lot of trendy middle class types just love the ambience and ethnic mix in Hackney..It can be a total nightmare for people. The rates of violent crime are truly shocking..And House prices keep going up and up thanks to the huge influx of white incomers to Stoke Newington,Shoreditch and London Fields.
Gentrification isnt always a bad thing but it has had some shit effects in Hackney.
The working class are shat on or largely ignored by the trendy middle class types. In Hackney there are loads of things for Middle Class kids to do...Acting Schools....Tennis Clubs and Cricket clubs but its a lot harder to find Football clubs.....
The council spent over £12million on a sports centre for Middle class people in Stoke Newington but wont spend a fraction of that on things like boxing or football.

i'm white, i guess i'm middle class, trendy?:D doubt it, we bought a flat in clapton 10 years ago when it was dead cheap because no one wanted to live there...

yes there is gentrification in hackney, stoke newington is full of people who couldn't afford islington prices...

I would hope that there are more good points than a decent greengrocers!

As has been alluded too though, Hackney may be fine and dandy if you are a young person who has moved into the area and can take full advantage of the good points. If you are a single mother stuck there living in run down council accommodation , faced with sending your kids to totally inadequate schools, worrying about your son falling in with the wrong crowd and having to put up with a load of antisocial wankers on your estate - in other words disproprtionately experiencing disadvantages in the borough - I guess your opinion would be a bit different.

Don't let an impression of the borough's all-round urban grooviness in your eyes blind you to the fact that a lot of people who live there are not getting the deal they deserve.

all round grooviness? :) :) no I don't hinge my opinons on greengrocers, honest! I've lived in Hackney for nearly 15 years I know what the deal is ;)

There are quite a few people who have lived in Hackney for as long as that and have no blooody idea what the deal is for a lot of the people who live there.
There is economic aparthied in Hackney and most of the trendies dont really give a shit....But they do "all hate blair" daaarling.
