The Labour party in Hackney are really chomping on the bit about this C4 investagtion / survey - they are as mad as hell
And where the hell is BarryB? He's usually the first on these boards to defend Jules Pipe and his regime

No, I don't think Hackney is shit. I think being poor is shit. There is a difference.tbaldwin said:Hackney is shit for most people who live there. But obviously for a few richer trendier types its not a problem.

just like there are PLENTY of middle class and "public school" people in hackney..both places are still very mixed areas.BEARBOT said:there are PLENTY of middle class and "public school" people in hackney..both places are still very mixed areas.

It disproportionately affects the poor.marty21 said:crime only affects the poor?
BEARBOT said:there is quite a range of incomes in hackney..it has a certain reputation which is inaccurate.people who have never lived in islington or hackney and especially people who dont know islington beyond upper st. think islington is a nice safe middle class area.
in fat there is PLENTY of crime, bad ASBO kids and dodgy estates in the bourogh of islington.just like there are PLENTY of middle class and "public school" people in hackney..both places are still very mixed areas.

Monkeynuts said:I would hope that there are more good points than a decent greengrocers!
As has been alluded too though, Hackney may be fine and dandy if you are a young person who has moved into the area and can take full advantage of the good points. If you are a single mother stuck there living in run down council accommodation , faced with sending your kids to totally inadequate schools, worrying about your son falling in with the wrong crowd and having to put up with a load of antisocial wankers on your estate - in other words disproprtionately experiencing disadvantages in the borough - I guess your opinion would be a bit different.
Don't let an impression of the borough's all-round urban grooviness in your eyes blind you to the fact that a lot of people who live there are not getting the deal they deserve.

If I were living elsewhere I'd still have problems with wankers on council estates, poor schools and kids getting in with the wrong crowd, because those are factors caused (or exacerbated) by concentrations of poverty, which is basically what estates are (and I can't afford to go private yet). At least in Hackney there are plenty of things for my daughter to do, and we don't have to have a car to get there. All the bohemian stuff is open to everyone - you'd be surprised how much mixing there is.
Exactly.marty21 said:and i'd be lying if i didn't say that there were social problems on some of the estates caused by such concentrations of poverty, but these problems are not unique to hackney...
