Hackney is not the worst place to live!

:D I used to work for Hackney Council a few years ago... Glad I got a proper job. (My former boss now works at Southwark, so that's why it's gone downhill...)

Just ring the service centre up and ask them to post you one. That's what I did. No need to get upset! ;)

Incidentally, a friend of a friend had their 'citizenship' ceremony at Hackney Town Hall. Amongst a bunch of other stuff they received a leather Hackney passport wallet

It's just a tv show, the only reason to be upset is if you're trying to sell your house in Hackney right now and everyone took it so seriously that no-one wanted to live there and you couldn't sell up.

One of the bloody presenters lives in Hackney, it's just tongue in cheek.

Jesus Christ talk about New Labour spin - appearance over reality

The Labour party in Hackney are really chomping on the bit about this C4 investagtion / survey - they are as mad as hell

And where the hell is BarryB? He's usually the first on these boards to defend Jules Pipe and his regime

In reply to several of your posts. We dont think everything is wonderful. We know that a lot of improvements are necessary. But that is happening. Otherwise how else do you explain our sweeping victory in May?

I am not a 'left wing' councillor. I am a left wing councillor. This is certainly recognised by Hackney Trades Union Council on whose request I chaired the recent Hackney John McDonnell campaign meeting. This meeting which was also called by Leabridge Labour Party Branch brought together left wing members of the Labour Party and the various Socialist groups in Hackney.

I think it's alright.Im always more wary when im there but that's about it.Im more pranged in Kennington..

Hackney is shit for most people who live there. But obviously for a few richer trendier types its not a problem..They live parrrallel lives and are generally untouched by the poverty, despair and crime that blights many peoples lives.

You're right. They're all really desperate to move out to the Home Counties, but can't quite afford it.

Same here...that's before I ended up working for Lambeth Council. Talk about frying pans and fires! :D

No, I don't think Hackney is shit. I think being poor is shit. There is a difference.

crime only affects the poor?

there is quite a range of incomes in hackney..it has a certain reputation which is inaccurate.people who have never lived in islington or hackney and especially people who dont know islington beyond upper st. think islington is a nice safe middle class area.

in fat there is PLENTY of crime, bad ASBO kids and dodgy estates in the bourogh of islington.:( just like there are PLENTY of middle class and "public school" people in hackney..both places are still very mixed areas.

One veg and fruit stall owned by John - who, incidently, puts his prices up on a Saturday in order to cater for the gullible.

I live in Hackney and like most places it has it's good and bad points. The greengrocers on Chatworth Road is reasonably priced and the food is always fresh.

I would hope that there are more good points than a decent greengrocers!

As has been alluded too though, Hackney may be fine and dandy if you are a young person who has moved into the area and can take full advantage of the good points. If you are a single mother stuck there living in run down council accommodation , faced with sending your kids to totally inadequate schools, worrying about your son falling in with the wrong crowd and having to put up with a load of antisocial wankers on your estate - in other words disproprtionately experiencing disadvantages in the borough - I guess your opinion would be a bit different.

Don't let an impression of the borough's all-round urban grooviness in your eyes blind you to the fact that a lot of people who live there are not getting the deal they deserve.

I'm a single Mum living on a housing association estate, and I love living in Hackney too. If I were living elsewhere I'd still have problems with wankers on council estates, poor schools and kids getting in with the wrong crowd, because those are factors caused (or exacerbated) by concentrations of poverty, which is basically what estates are (and I can't afford to go private yet). At least in Hackney there are plenty of things for my daughter to do, and we don't have to have a car to get there. All the bohemian stuff is open to everyone - you'd be surprised how much mixing there is.

i manage housing association stock in hackney:eek:

and i'd be lying if i didn't say that there weren't social problems on some of the estates caused by such concentrations of poverty, but these problems are not unique to hackney...

Good - sincerely.

Obviously problems are not unique to Hackney but I guess they vary in severity from area to area and also by personal experience. Somewhere in the country will be worst. Whether this is Hackney I wouldn't know, but would suspect not.

No, he lives in baldersworld. ;) :D

Talking of a parralel universe....It seems to be that a lot of richer people who moved into Hackney just love its diversity...They have pushed up property prices and local people who could afford to buy once upon a time no longer can.
Hackney has huge levels of violent crime. But the Rich go to different shops and restaurants and dont really give too much of a shit....Just as long as they can impress there friends by living on the edge.....
