Hackers, why are they so stupid?

You can see what items are installed, being used and what is autostarted by windows.
From that you could look for an exploit for 1 of the given softwares to gain your entry.
Once you are in, you can then add a backdoor to windows autostart, and make it look like a genuine running program.
ie.. if you have an ATI graphics card and the ATI software is auto started when windows boots, you could insert a new program called ATIscreenres.exe which would be your trojan/backdoor and your target would be non the wiser.

Ta, interesting stuff. I shall crop my desktop screenshots in future.

gotta love social engineering

Yeah, my favourite is going around to someones house to look at something technical for them... suggest I check their PC over while I'm at it... claim that I've found evidence of hacking... get them to provide me with remote access so I can check it out... log on spoofing the IP address that "the original hack left in the logs", then hack the bank where I work for immediate profit or to provide an excuse to charge them for overtime.

 ;) :)

Joking aside, if your computer has been compromised, how do you know it is now safe? Were the tools he used executed while the compromised system was running, or from their own system?
Did he advise you on how to avoid the problem in future, it's no use just fixing someones system if they go and do the same things which made them vulnerable in the first place all over again.

Lazy git :D

My version of computer genius came a-knocking last night - he tends to agree with the majority of the posts here, but is curious about what your friend finds.

Stobs, have you heard of False Authority Syndrome?? It well known in IT security and engineering circles.

Radar, thanks for that link, which I commend to all others reading this thread. Nice for me to see that (relative to examples given) I'm very good at warning people about the limits of my knowledge when I give them computer advice.

In order of decreasing probability...

* Stobes, or someone in hr family, did it and isn't owning up to it
* Some kind of drive-by scripting exploit, malware, or virus
* Her "computer expert" did it to show off.
* Somebody spent time and hassle to break into a computer that probaby has little useful information on it apart from Stobes and her family...

Ho-hum...

Agreed - I'm voting for the first option. But I'd like to hear what her friend has to say.

I;m highly suspect of her "friend"... If he is a bright as she sys then he has all the tools, and I've foud in the past that people who want to help after a crime are usually the ones who perpertrated it... Sounds too much like he's driving to divert blame, etc...

hmmm - interesting theory.

He hacks into ss's machine to test one of his scripts and then goes back to see if he can trace it.

they removed a site from my "favourites" list, then added some pics into my photos files.

this is the best bit so far...lost yer donkeysexDOTcum Linky? ;)

go on show us the pickees! :D

...make sure yer friend checks for anything that may put you into a prosecutable position before you hand over your Box to SO6 wuntchanow!...you'll prolly need an MOD spec wipe before mind.

I wish it was a joke. But its not. I dont take kindly to this and will be taking the appropriate action when we find out some more tomorrow.

Not saying its a joke... Just that someone might be jumping to the wrong conclusions... Oh, are you seriously going to take this to the Internet Cops...?

oh yes - the 2000 pound fine for unauthorized use of a computer. Can I bust my kids for this? Are you going to charge your kid for all the times he has posted on this site using either yours or your wifes login?

Come on - let's get serious. You have one file that was deleted, one picture added and a link disappeared. That is truly minor, imo.

If this "hacking" is giving causing you so much grief - DON'T GO ON-LINE!!!

Get a grip - the dangers of connecting to the internet are real, so either protect yourself or stay away.
