Gutsy : New Version of Ubuntu

Apropos of nothing, I was fixing up my old PC so that I could sell it (anyone want a perfectly decent dual Athlon X2 shuttle PC, now with replaced SATA cables? no? oh well) and thought I might as well stick a 64-bit Linux on it. Ubuntu really did hit the spot there. I was most impressed, it's been a while since I installed a Linux on anything. If I do manage to find a buyer I'll be saying "okay, it comes with XP, but there's a more modern OS on it as well".

I'm surprised they've gone for Compiz enabled as default, when, as mentioned in the Wired comments section, there are so many problems associated with this software.

There's a review at the Register (particularly about Dell laptops) ...
And Wired has this to say
The next release is scheduled to be a long-term support("LTS") release, the first since 6.06. It will be supported for five years on the server and three on the desktop.

Dell willing, looks like Canonical is on course to ship a stable and secure, fully modern LTS desktop around April next year!

I use 6.06 LTS will I be able to do a straight upgrade to the next LTS?

Should be... The next LTS version will be 08.04...

which mean not until next April.:p

I put Gutsy on this Mini...but no grub, lilo or yaboot appeared...couldn't find the efi or the rEFIt laugh I'm supposed to redo so press Alt on a Microsoft keyboard during boot up to get into System/BootUp thing...which then gives me MacOS or Windows...and Ubuntu is on Windows...wot blarks Pip.

On the Gutsy disc there is an "Option" to Intsall Grub or Lilo...do I do that then tehn tehn?:o

I can understand it perfectly well already ta.:)
I don't quite understand why you didn't get grub or lilo (think grub is the default bootloader with Ubuntu?), but if you still have your previous install with only the CLI, then the article posted by Jonti earlier has what looks to be the solution:

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Yep, but Mr Squelch is using Mac hardware which tends to have a different bootloader...

Just installed it, and I'm quite impressed. As easy as ever to get working, with tons of stuff pre-installed.

Worked with most of my hardware, just need to figure out how to get it to recognise my touchscreen and how to use wine and I'll be a total convert!

weeeeeeeeeeeeeell.... i sorted out the MacPowerPC...but it still borked at the mnitor it was to be used on...but the sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg did get me out of the cli problem. with that one.

This one...the Mac Intel has to be prompted to preset the MacOS/Windows option screen by promptly tapping Alt on a reboot otherwise it goes into MacOS automatically...using Right Arrow key + Enter allows me to get into Gutsy...which loads using Grub...au naturement...

But the PowePC gave me yaboot...which I liked..I used to using grub and seeing it...but it's not there to use it's Options of OS List.

Tried to reload it alone last night...but nish...heyho will live without it.

Compiz is a larf and Wine was smooth as, to load, and helps with l33chin. :D

http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/ is worth noting.:p :p :p

Watching the sunset over the Atlantic, and making soup at the moment...which is niiiiiice.

I'm pretty settled with the 6.06LTS version now.

If I changed to an unstbale version it's sure to mess up my graphic rendering and lovely multi-screen array I've got going.
